It all started when I seen a buddies antler knife a few years ago. He told me how he had sent in the antler to a knife maker, while I admired it. Being a somewhat handy guy I knew it wouldn't be long before I would attempt making my own. After shooting a big bodied deer with a broken rack on one side I thought about how I wanted to accomplish the build. I decided to haft it in pewter. It's not quite done & I haven't made a sheath yet, but I'm purty stoked with the result.

A fine example! What did you use for the bolster fill? Pewter, tin, ...?

I like it. I have never seen one done with a split antler like that. I will have to post the skinning knife I made out of a sawall blade tonight.
Very nice... I like it..

Now I see why you were so excited about those salt & pepper shakers!!!!!
Next time you'll have to take before & after pics, no ones gonna believe those used to be beautiful shakers!!! Outcome is much better than the original product in my opinion!!!

Most of these kinds of attempts look like something that a person would set on the mantle and forget about, I have to admit this thing just begs to get bloody.
Great job.

Thanks for the compliments. It is backwards from most, but the way it fit my hand made trying it that way neccesary. I made it for use, so I'm hopeful it will get bloody before November is over.
I did take pics of the shakers just cause they were cool. If they hadn't had condition issues & missing the little spoon, I would have used them as they were.
I used the bucks other antler for my homemade fold up deer decoy.

Drilled a hole in the antler slightly larger than the tang. I hogged it out so down inside it has a somewhat pie shape for the tin to lock into. Fit & soldered the brass guard to the blade. I used a dremel rasp to make the entrance to the opening fit the begining of the blade shank. Then I used the above pictured pewter(97% tin & lead free) salt & pepper shaker set. I melted it, got it real hot. Heated the blade tang, poured in the tin & pushed the tang in all the way. After that cooled I made a paper mold out of card stock & used standard masking tape to hold it in place. Then filled the mold with the melted tin. That fills the area between the antler & guard. After that its a mess of files & sanding/polishing.
I'm working on a sheath for it now.
Very nicely done !
I look forward to seeing the completed sheath.
