I'm shooting a Martini 30/40AI, 26" Ackley barrel, .308" groove diameter. Has always put 3 180gr RN Hornady j-words pushed by 49gr H4831 @ 2200 into just a bit more than a dime since I built it back in '69. Started trying a RD311165, Al GC, sized to
.310", double lubed with mule snot. Recommended charges of 5744 not too spiffy. Started thinking ( a bad thing) and decided to try some 4831 @ 45gr just for grins. I always start a new load at 25yds, got 3 in one ragged hole measuring .240 C to C, velocity was 1963 avg. Oh boy, showing great promise, back off to 50yds. Seeing a big puff of smoke, and worse, the rifle is stringing vertically, starting low over about 3 inches, something it has never done. Was reading on here, gonna try backing off some on the charge as my only goal is accuracy, not speed. Any other suggestions appreciated. GW

Mu le snot doesn't work too well. Any leading? Try a better lube or coating.

what is the "recommended charge" you are using?
Have you run it over a chronograph? Vertical stringing is either velocity or barrel harmonics, or both.
Drop the powder charge 10% and see what happens.
