Hi, getting ready to start a new project and looking for thoughts and advice please.

i have 2 X CB .30 cals 1-10 twists already in hunting rifles, a 336 30/30 Marlin and a dedicated suppressed .308WIN BRNO
Now looking at trying something new with boolits, longish range. The local range goes out to 700 yards so there is plenty of room to try it out.
i have a bunch of molds in the 150 to 210 weight range, the usual suspects, Lymans, 31141 and the like in FN, RN, RCBS clones . .. . also the Saeco RG4 wich i have great hopes for. ..

looking at a heavy barrel BSA CF2 in .308 with 1-12 at a very good price, i have 20MOA canted rail plus the Burris rings with inserts to lift the scope a further 20MOA. With the VX3s 120MOA i should be able to get out a distance . . . or should i keep saving for a 1-10 Remington heavy barrel which do come up for sale often . . . but at twice the price of the BSA.

is there an advantage either way ? any thoughts would be appreciated

cheers R

1-12 would be my preference.

1-12 is better for the heavier bullet.

Full power loads either will work - fast twist is tougher on boolits - hey any excuse is a good on to get a new toy.

There are a lot of 308's out there with 10 twist, 11.25 twist and 12 twist. All of them have been shot out that far with really good results. What does matter is the boolit weight, fit and velocity you're going to shoot them at. 1 MOA at 2400 fps is not all that difficult to obtain providing you do your homework right (it's the little things that make a difference there).

If the barrel quality is the same go with the 1:12 twist...

Here are two LR threads with the .308 that you might find interesting if you haven't seen them already..
IIRC they don't discuss twist but there is a lot of good info in the threads never the less..

Definitely the 12" twist although a 13 or 14" twist would be even better with higher velocity possible with accuracy for longer range shooting.

Hi, as you can see i got the rifle . . . . just arrived from the courier company this morning after a recrown

thanks to those that gave their opinions, its much appreciated by me.

a few things to do before i shoot it, a good look at the bedding, a lower set of rings maybe . . . the 20moa rail will have to wait untill i strip another rifle which i am still using for a little longer.

thanks again ... i will post results when they come in

regards Ross

In a dilemma after firing my first shots with the BSA . . . with jb's at 100 yards.

in between shifts i took the BSA and a .22 out for a test run, no real time, it was just a quick shot to see if it had potential . . . and have a play with my new toy.
After dialing to the middle of the elevation and horizontal travel i bore sighted it using the Burris inserts and fired my first shot, high and 2 inches left. fired one more dialed in the correction, i had 3 rounds left to shoot a group. The next 2 were in the 1 inch circle and touching, ok this is promising, the last one i felt slide away to the right as i fired. .. for a half inch group. It should have been a quarter inch but no time to shoot more, but still worth a smile.
It doesnt say a lot one 3 shot group but does say a little, potential.
Now i know i have approx 70moa of elevation left with jbs at 2700fps, probably take 10 off that for boolits
The bedding is maybe ok for now . . .
I like the heavy weight and the way it moves under recoil, slow with a gentle push, i can do some good shooting with this . . . should i continue with j bullets, maybe ...

cheers R.

I have four rifles in 308. A Savage with a 1-10, a Remington 700 with a 1-12 and two Winchester 88s with 1-12.

If I had a choice I would go with 1-12. I would not turn down a good 1-10 if the price is right.
