I have about 250 175 grain or so 30 cal gas check bullets I got from LEADHEADS. Anybody got any plinking loads for 30-06 1500 fps or so. i guess I can use Lyman data? Should you seat to touch rifling if possible? I am new to rifle cast bullets. I shoot much handgun but little rifle cast bullets. Thanks

Dogdoc--I don't even remember shooting my first jacketed reload. I know it was in my 30-06 because that's all I had at the time. Reason I don't remember was because it was so much like the factory loads I had shot--as far as blast and recoil. But I remember well the first cast bullets I shot in it. I was using Lyman data and had two loadings. One was using 4064 powder and it was around 30-30 velocity(about 2400 fps)--and that's about what it felt like a 30-30 using factory jacketed load. The second group was using Unique and it was about 1600 fps. The blast and recoil was so low,I thought I had a missfire.

Dogdoc,

I'm pretty green at casting, but I've been doing some work on my Rem. 700 30'06 with the Lyman 311041 bullet. It's GC and drops at 178 grs. I've been loading it with 2400 and CCI 200 primers. Cant' seem to get past 22.0 grains before accuracy starts going out the window. Good plinking load at around 1,700 to 1,800 fps. Shoots approx 1 1/4" 5-shot groups. Tried some SR-4759 too. So far it doesn't have the accuracy of the 2400. Plan on trying some XMP 5744 soon as Lyman recommends it for accuracy.

I use 18 gr of 2400 with the SAECO 196 gr (and in the past the Lyman 193 gr Silhouette bullet) as a match load in my 03s. Accuracy is great and recoil almost non existant.

Consult a manual for a max charge for your bullet weight, but you won't want to go anywhere near max for plinking. Somewhere in the upper teens should be about right.

If your rifle won't shoot with 16.0 gr. 2400 and ANY cast boolit of 165 to 200 gr. it's just plain stupid! This is one of C.E. Harris' favorite loads.
