I want to rebarrel an old rifle from 22 hornet to 17 hornet. But when comparing pressures one is rated in CUP and the newer 17 is rated in PSI. The rifle in question is a H&R Handi rifle. its an older generation with a cast reciver, Made in the late 70s. This same reciver could be had in 22 Hornet, 22 Jet, 30-30, 357, 44 mag, and 45-70. anyone know if the new 17 Hornaday Hornet will be in the same range? I know CUP and PST are not able to be crossed over, So how would I know? Thanks DR

If Yours is an SP1, it wont work for 30-30, the magnums, or 45/70
If yours was a SP2, you will have to send it to remlin for rebarrel.
We all know how that will end.

Just did a little checking. According to the hodgdon website, the .22 hornet, an old cartridge, has a chamber pressure of 26,000 to 43,000 psi. The .17 Hornet runs from 39,000 to 48,000psi. Your handi rifle was made in the 70's. It's not cast iron, it's steel. All the loads listed have about the same pressure range. I would think that the action would be safe enough with this cartridge, as long as you had a good barrel. Besides, I was still a young man in the '70's, so I don't consider that so old....[smilie=1:

Yes it is a cast steel reciver, and I remember the 70s well! The gun is older than the SB1 or SB2 models Its a Topper 158. It came with a hornet barrel and a 20 ga barrel. Im going to use the 20 ga barrel stub and put a Green Mountain barrel in it. If all goes well Ill end up with a switch barrel hornet! Ill check with hogdons site, the book I was using had the 22 listed in CUP and the new 17 listed in PSI. Thanks DR
