OK , I picked up a Marlin in 45-70 at the gun show on saturday and now I need a mould (mold) for a good medium weight boolit . So what I was thinking was which of the current Lyman , RCBS , and Lee moulds would be a good choice to purchase ?

I know Ranch Dog has custom Lee's but I as others would like to have choices as we do like the looks of our projectiles as much as performance . :-D

I do like the looks of the RNFP boolits and would like it in a PB , so that would put a big limit on choices I do believe . Then there will be the hunting load also , more than likely a GC design .

I do have a few GB's coming but nothing in a 45cal for rifle .

What this is boiling down too is to get something to hold me over till I can get in on one of the future GB's for this caliber .

Thanking you in advance for all replies .

Icer, get the RCBS 400? or 405? FPGC. Accurate, flat point for whacking critters, and feeds flawlessly in Marlins. Mine cast about 420 gr. in WW and was accurate in light loads even without GC. YMMV.

I have a Lee 457-340-F gr. and a Lyman 457643, both work great but the Lyman is my favorite. I picked these because they don't use gas checks. My loads are about 1350 with the 405 gr. boolit so the plain base is fine. If I were looking for something to hold me over the Lee would be my pick. They don't cost a lot, cast good boolits, don't use gas checks and come in several weights. The 457-340-F and 457-405-F should work through the action of a 1895 without any problems.

The only gas check boolit I have had any experience with was a borrowed RCBS-45-405-FN. It shot as good as anything that I have used but I didn't need the GC.

I hope you will enjoy your Marlin as much as I do mine.

Can't say enough about the RD 420gr mold, I have the two holer, it makes great bullets that drop out nicely, the only downside is that it sucks the lead out of my little 10lb Lee pot.

Keith,

You did not mention what the bullet would be used for but if you are looking for a good hunting bullet in the 45 caliber rifle you can hardly do better than Lyan 457122.

This is the old Gould bullet, 330 grain hollow point, and still in the catalog.

It has been written up by a bunch of authors and tried with a bunch of loads. I use it on top of a full case of black powder and am quite pleased with it.

Give it a try.

+1 for the RCBS 405 FPGC ( with or w/o the GC) My mold drops 416 gr from #2 alloy and 31.5 gr of AA2015 pushes it out of my H&R Trapdoor Carbine at 1278 fps.

I like the Gould as well....but for a 405gr. bullet I like the Saeco 405grainer, I have 3 saecos for the 45/70 and they are all winners the 405gr.pb, the 465gr. gc. and the 525gr. pb...just something about the design and the moulds that make them super accurate.

My Malin with micro groove barrel loved the RCBS 405 FN GC. I recommend it highly.

+1 for the RCBS 405 GC.

In my SS Guide Gun it shoots sub 2" at 100 with 57.0 W748 and a magnum
primer. This is a low pressure load (trapdoor pressure reported by
Brian Pierce) and does about 1700-1750 from the GG short bbl. You'll want
a good recoil pad, but it won't loosen you fillings like the 2050 fps loads
will. :)

If you have a 45/70, you have to own at least one 457122HP (the Gould design). My next choice would be the RCBS 45-405-FN but here you have a GC design. Then there's the #018 Saeco that's a nice 412 grain RFN PB.

That's my picks in order./beagle

Lymans 457124 is patterned after the original 45-70 bullet. I have it in a HP design. My trapdoor Springfield loves it .

Paul Jones just made up a .45 cal boolit of about 420 grains depending on alloy .
It has a .362 meplat, almost a wadcutter. Great hunting boolit out to 200 or so yards. HUGE wound channel. Call Paul and tell him to give you the specs on Andy's
45362 boolit.
