I have to say, I'm right proud of myself. Went to the range for a couple hours today and took the Browning BPCR 45-70 and about six different loads I was trying out with two different bullets and charges of Swiss 1.5. I think I've found a winner although the other may do just as well with a bit more work. I was most pleased and we had such a good day for it. I found it does make a difference to pay attention to where that bubble is and not ignore it as I've been prone to do before. Today, I think it mattered.

...and my best group at 7/8" if you discount the fouler shot!! Lyman 457125 seated at top of the second drive band and 62 gr of Swiss 1.5 with .060 wad

Looks like it's coming together. What are the specs on that Brooks bullet you were slip fitting if you don't mind me asking....

Chris.

Actually it was originally a Postell bullet that wasn't doing so good. Steve revamped it into a more pointy bullet with six grease grooves and made it about 15 gr lighter. It's not one you can see on his website. As always, he did a superb job as my rifle really likes it.

Photobucket is doing it's maintenance thing tonight so couldn't use it to post a photo so, I went to Flickr. This is the bullet you asked about.

COlt - what distance were the groups shot at?

ColColt

300 yards...no just kidding. They were shot at 100.

Whenever you shoot a group that has cuddlin' holes, you did a great job.

Well done!

Cuddlin' holes-now, that's a new one on me. I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. If I/the bullet can do that again I'll consider it a winner. Maybe a different primer can even do better. those were Federal's 215. Perhaps some WLR primers next time. I've yet to see any BR2's available. Thanks for the uplifting comment.

Watching the bubble really seems to help groups.
A 4 mph breeze (wind moving about walking speed) will move one of those slow heavy bullets about an inch at 100 yards so it pays to watch the wind too.

There was some wind but very little and off and on. It didn't seem to affect groups, though. The main problem was a carpenter bee who kept harassing the shooters. Just intimidating but troublesome. He took a particular interest in my barrel flying back and forth horizontally. I gave him a big dose of smoke and he finally moved on.

Yep, real close but not that heavy. It's even reminiscent of the Lyman 375366 just not flat nosed.

Then, the NEI 346F?
It is for Browning rifles ...

You have been able to find Fed 215's and WLR's? Now I am jealous.

ColColt

Lucky indeed but paid dearly for them. I got 5K at a little over $180 for the 215 primers. The WLR I got at a gun show about a month ago...$32/1000.

What bullet were you using? I have three 40 cal moulds and am in the process of developing loads. I'd like to try the Saeco 740.

Lyman 457193 cast 20:1 sized .461" lubed with SPG. My H&I die is stamped .459 but sizes to .461". I bought it used at a gunshow.

ColColt

A Lyman great. I think someone's lapped that die if it's stamped .459". You'd have to size an awful lot of bullets to wear it down that much. Lyman moulds, at least recently in past years, have sized under-not over that much. The one's I've had have been right on except one I had the bands enlarged as it was casting smaller than I wanted by .002".

I've also had luck with their size dies. I have a .459" die that sizes .459. My 457125 mould will cast bullets .460".

COL. what year did you get your Lyman 457125 mold? mine is around 5 years old and the best it does is a bit un-round at .4575 to .458 inch depending on the melt I spose. it shoots good but I always wanted a larger mold so I bought a baco mold in that configuration that throws a true .460 inch boolit and a plus is that the grease grooves seem to be bigger and more like the gubberment boolits I have examined from battlefields.

You should have already tried the Saeco 740 in your 40-65. It will shoot in a 40-65 when other bullets won't.

bigted-My 457125 is fairly new...maybe three months or so. Got it from Bro. Potterfield. I'm quite pleased with it, especially the size it drops with the 1:20 alloy and it's to date been accurate-more than me of course. It shows all indications of being as good or better than the Saeco 645.

I don't have a 40-65 but, I do plan on trying it in the 40-70SS...pretty much the same. I already have three 40 caliber moulds to work with.
