In a 5.5 lb Contender carbine recoil is brisk. Made the mistake of shooting mine prone - once. For cast boolit data you can use 358 Win.

Mine is a 358JDJ. recoil is very harsh with top loads. i had a VAIS (sp) break installed and can shoot it quite well now. I don't use cast in it because of the break. It is a very powerfull round in the contender, enough for ANY deer in the Americas ,north or south.

I had a JDJ 23"carbine barrel in this caliber a few years ago. Recoil, especially off the bench, can best be described as BRUTAL. Firing prone? OMG, that must have been one painful experience! With AA2520 I could run 200 and 220 grain loads to 2,500 fps +, and I wasn't even pushing top loads. I could even approach 2200 fps with 250's, but recoil was even more severe. As a handgun, I think this is probably more than most average people can really stand as far as recoil goes. I have never seen anyone who could shoot these 444-based cartridges from a contender more than a few rounds without developing a MAJOR flinch.
With a brake, recoil is tamed somewhat, but sometimes a brake makes shooting cast loads all but impossible, due to gas-cutting and lead spitting, not to mention plugging the holes in the brake. Lighter bullets also reduces recoil, but sometimes performance suffers. All in all, like jhalcott says, it is more than enough cartridge to get the job done, if you can manage the recoil. After firing this one, you will think your '06 is a fine plinker...

Speaking of brutal recoil. I tried some Ruger #1 45-70 loads in my Encore rifle with the lightweight synthetic stocks. :shock::shock::shock: Holy crap did they kick. It made a 458 Lott seem like a walk in the park.

I've shot a 45-70 t/c in 14" so recoil don't scare me. just want a good safe starting load to work on
