View Full Version : Scope Mount Dilemma -- Any Advice?

I have a nice old Martini .22 target rifle that I want to use for squirrel this fall. I tried it last year with its iron sights, but they didn't do the trick for me. This one is fitted with mounts for a vintage Fecker target scope, but that didn't work well for me, either. Field of vision too small -- made it too hard to pick up anything in the woods through the scope.

I want to mount a "modern" scope on it, but I don't want to put any more holes in the barrel. The Fecker scope is a long one, and the mounts are ~14-1/2" apart (you can see the mounts on the barrel in the image above). I thought maybe I could get a piece of Weaver mount that would fit all the way across both existing mounts, but the ones Brownell's has in their catalog are only 10" long -- plus, I'm not sure the contours will work with my barrel -- which is about 1" diameter at the receiver end and 7/8" where the front mount is drilled.

If all else fails, I can always get a replacement barrel and have the scope mounted to it.

Anyway, I thought someone out there might have some thoughts on a solution.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Seeing it's only a .22 (little recoil), could you attached a short rail to just the rear mount?

If that seems a bit flimsy, maybe to then use epoxy to glue the front part of the rail down to the barrel? A heat gun will soften the epoxy when you want to remove it.

Or maybe, can you attach something like this to the rear mount? http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Flattop-Extended-Riser-Long-QD-Mount-Base-For-20mm-picatinny-Weaver-Rail-/370855742000?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5658b98a30
