Hi Folks,

What is the most accurate centerfire double-action revolver you've ever shot?

Take care, Tom

S&W 657 Hunter in 41 magnum just sold it and probably will be sorry of it. IT was a 1 Inch or under gun at 35 yards with cast bullets. IM now working with a magnum research BFR in 500 JRH. Just started with a new accurate mold with 385 gr and 440 gr I have the gun shooting in the 3/4 inch bracket at 35 yards with 5 shot groups im sure the gun will do better and be quite a shooter . IT is a handful . tks KEN

I would say it is a toss up between a S&W model 10-2 and a S&W 686-1.
Of the two, I think I'd like to have the model 10 back.

A model 27 customized by Bill Davis back in the mid 80s. Second was a Ruger Security Six also customized by the same gentleman. Both would shoot an inch at 50yds...five shot groups off bags. He claimed they'd do 10 shots under an inch off a mechanical rest. I believe they would. Factory gun is my 686. I've gotten five shots just over an inch with it several times at 50 yds.

My Dan Wesson Model 15 with a 6 in barrel made from a section of take-off Savage 30-30 barrel and a 32-20 replacement cylinder. The original 8 in. .357 setup was really good too, just the 32-20 is even better, the first loads went into an inch at 25 yards and everything I have tried does about the same.

S&W revolvers are great..but I've had fine accuracy from Colts and Rugers and Rossi's and Taurus's too.

I've been shooting a S&W Mod 16-4 .32 mag and a really bad looking(rough) Taurus 82 police trade in lately and both shoot fantastic...Also was rather impressed with a Webley MkIV .45acp converted revolver. Once I found a bullet the Webley liked it's accuracy was impeccable

My most accurate revolver EVER is my S&W Model 16-4 x 6" in 32 Magnum. Whether the boolits are run at 700 or 1400 FPS, it is LIGHTS OUT--and not just with one design, either.

Next closest was a built-up 45 Colt PPC gun assembled on a Model 28 frame and cylinder--given minimum chambers and throats--and a truck-axle barrel of 6" length. It belongs to a friend that will not part with it at any price, owing to its fine accuracy with about any boolit from 185 to 270 grains of any design. Size boolits at .452" for its .4515 throats and .451" grooves, and they will stack on top of each other. Truth to tell, its best loads vs. my 32's best loads are close to a dead heat, but we have swapped guns back and forth on range days and the 32 is a lot less fatiguing to run rounds through long-term. I think that is the telling difference.

Good morning
My most accurate ever DA Revolver is still with me.. Dan Wesson caliber 41 magnum 8inch barrel shooting machine. Barrel set at .001, barrel nut tight. With a 210 Gc with 21.4 grains of "that lot" of 296 from my modified "laydown" Creedmore position will shoot under 5 inch groups at 200 meters. Used to head shoot turkeys for practice. Never qiute got good enough to hit the ram horn every time.
Have a caliber 375 Supermag Dan Wesson that is nearly as accurate. The caliber 414 Supermag lags behind the .375 a hair.
So put it all together... If I want an accurate DA Revolver I get a DW. Sturdy, will last a life time (mine), and has all the history of winning The most demanding shooting sport evr.. Steel critters out to 200 meters. No other DA Revolver has ever come close and to my peanut thinker history is the real test. 90% of all matches won by a DA Revolver = Dan Wesson.
So I guess in the end my opinion does not matter at all. Get a Dan Wesson. Set it up correctly. And all those other DA Revolvers get left behind.
And I never said anything about the caliber 357 Dan Wesson with the 10 inch tube screwed into place that won .....

The most accurate revolver was probably a first year production Colt Shooting Master .38spl. With factory W-W wad cutter ammo, it was awful hard to miss what you were shooting at. Close was a S&W M-57 8 3/8" shiny nickel plated revolver made in the early 1980's. Under 60yds the Colt was the favorite, but after that the M-57 really showed it's stuff!

Those are 2 dw 15's with custom 1 in 12 twist bbls, heavy shrouds & muzzle breaks. All the factory bbl's pictured shoot lights out & the 8" bbl really shines when shooting over 100yds.

2nd would have to be a s&w model 10/ppc

I have a Dan Wesson 15-2HV8 that is simply amazing. My S&W's and Rugers don't come close to the same level of accuracy. In the early 80's I had a S&W 629 8 3/8" that shot very well but at the time I was not aware how special that one was. It got traded for something else. I have had a half dozen 29's/629's since and none have shot to the same level of accuracy as the first one.

Korth revolvers are other-worldly in terms of both accuracy and price.

The 32 S&W Long is an incredibly accurate target cartridge. The most accurate HANDGUN I've ever fired was in this caliber, a Walther GSP-C. I loaded some ammo for a guy using Hornady HBWCs and WW-231 powder to about 675 FPS. Part of the arrangement included access to the gun for test-firing. OFF THE HOOK accuracy.

Years ago I bought a brand new S&W Model 624 stainless in .44 Special with a 6 1/2" barrel and it shot SO well that I went out and bought a matching 624 with the 4" barrel to go with it ... and it shot equally as well so "just because" I went out and bought another 6 1/2" gun for a spare! Can't tell you which one of the 3 guns shoots the best either 'cause they all shoot WAY better than I can hold them with any combination of powder and boolit that I've ever shot through them so far ... and you couldn't pry ONE of those guns out of my hands with a crowbar!

82347 it's a tie. athis one was a model 29 smith till Mccullough rifle company got ahold of it. Will touch at 100yds when I do my part. Shooting tiny pears a couple weeks ago at 100. It was a blast. the other is this one. My DW 741 in 41 mag. I have never scoped it but it will put them in the same hole at 25. I want to find a mount for a scope on my 8" bbl. Had the barrel built from a douglas super. Scoped it might outshoot my smith. IDK.82348 These days all I carry is one of these during hunting season 90 percent of the time.

My Bill Davis and Jim Clark Rugers were the most accurate PPC revolvers I've ever shot and would equal the grouping which the ammunition was capable of firing a heavy test barrel from a Universal Receiver on a return-to-battery rest on concrete pedestal.

It takes very good ammunition to shoot inch ten-shot groups at 50 yards, and even factory wadcutter that good is hard to find today. But I have found that good handloads with Remington factory HBWC bullets or high quality cast bullets will do the job.

The most accurate DA revolver I currently own is a Colt Officer's Model Match heavy barrel, which was made in 1959. The custom PPC revolvers of the 1980s will do better, but this one is a classic which shoots alot better than my 65-year old eyes can see.

I am a fair shot, if the pistol is sighted in and I can practice, I can hit with it.
How far down range, do not know, fair out to 50 yards.

From the box factory guns it would have to be the old M14 or K38 Smith and Wesson. They were guarenteed to do 10 ring at 50 yards from the box with match ammo and most would do 2" or a little better from a machine rest. Close second would be the Model 27, or the Colt Python.

I got to thinking about this and there are really two ways to look at this, either sheer mechanical accuracy or shootable accuracy. For example most of the Smiths have an action easier to tune and more amendable to double action shooting for most people. This is why in the old PPC matches it was 10 Smiths to Every Colt. But The Colt Python, shooting master ect were no slouches either and some claimed that the 1-16 twist of the Colt was more suited to 148 gr wadcutters used in the old PPC matches. It ws always easier for me to Shoot the Smith but single action off the bench I have shot many 10 Ring groups from the Colts also. My M28 was set up for PPC and duty by Bill Laughridge many years ago and is about the best shooting duty pistol I have ever had and it's practical accuracy is all anyone could ever need, but from a rest at 100 yards the K 38 with the same MATCH ammo will shade it by almost an inch. The K38 has shot honest 5 shot groups at that range under 4". My Dad was a Colt person and for HIM the Colt was most accurate and he still has his old King Cobra and a Detctive Special that he got in the 1950's.

Green Frog
09-24-2013, 11:23 AM
I think my K-38 will be close to the best, while my newly-built custom 327 Fed Mag stainless K-Frame (Project 616) is probably a little better. I no longer own it, but probably the best revolver I ever owned for pure, all-out accuracy was a short cylinder PPC gun built by the late Fred Schmidt. This was his demo gun, built on a Model 14 with Douglas bull barrel, Aristocrat Rib, and a trigger that had to be felt to be believed. He was a true artist and craftsman.

I always liked using that old blue worn gun to beat the guys with the newest shiny special built guns. but then I have a .38-44 with a 5" barrel that is no slouch either. just have to get the right load and bullet weight so it shoot to the sights.

The most accurate centerfire double-action revolver I have ever fired.
It is also the only double-action revolver I currently own.

Smith & Wesson .44 Hand Ejector, First Model (aka "The Triple Lock")
6-1/2-inch barrel, .44 Smith & Wesson Special, shipped in 1916.
Returned to the factory in 1946 to have adjustable sights fitted.

**Lyman's 429383 and 4.7 grains of Hercules Bullseye. **
Boolits are cast from wheelweights, and weigh in at 246 grains.
I size them to 0.429, and lubricate with SPG in a Lyman No.45.
(Not the cartridges in the photo; those are factory W-W.)

Yes, I'm still loading from Hercules canisters bought in the early 1980s.
I have the Alliant variety on hand, but haven't needed to break into it yet.

Anyhoo...
If I do my part, this old S&W will still more than do its part.

Jim

**This load was developed in and for my revolver many years ago.**
YMMV, so please consult reliable handloading data proceed carefully.

jrmartin1964,

That is a beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing the photo. If you are going to have just one revolver, that is as good as it gets.

For me my old S&W model 14 with a 8 3/8" is the winner with a close second going to the 686 with a 6".

My 686 is by far the best shooting revolver ive ever handled .... though every -86 ive handled is which made me jump on my current when I found her. If only my 610 was as friendly in my paws as everyone else keeps posting that theirs is for them.

Actually I would guess it is probably my 38 S&W Victory Model. That gun shoots scary groups in single action with my hand loads. It is far more accurate than I ever imagined it would be.

My old PPC revolver, a Royce Weddle built S&W model 15. Sadly it's no longer in the stable.

My current champion is a S&W Model 14-3.

Royce Weddle was an absolute master at building an accurate revolver. He is a local legend since he was from Norman, recently a gent had one of his PPC revolvers for sale on one of the local gun boards and I seriously wanted to buy that revolver. I just did not have anything I wanted to get rid of to obtain it. I am somewhat full of regret that I did not. His revolvers were the most accurate ones I have ever shot or observed being shot.

S&W 14-3 HB with TH, TT, TS. Used it in bullseye competition, US and International style. This was a stock gun, no custom work.

Most accurate when fired single action was a Dan Wesson M-15 owned by an acquaintance. 12 shots 25 yards all touching from a machine rest--a quarter covered the center of every shot. I offered to buy it, but it was not for sale.
Most accurate when fired double action was a S&W M-10 that had been turned into a Bull barrel PPC gun. 7 pound, DA only trigger, Bomar Rib sights, 6 inch barrel, it put Federal 38b Wadcutters one atop the other. I wanted one bad, but having just become a new father, such toys were out of my reach.
Most accurate I ever personally owned was my first Colt Python. I miss that gun.

I had a friend who built me a .44 special( Factory barrel in the white and rough, but marked) he bored the cylinder on a model 28 to .44 special. the revolver shot a 1 1/2 group at 50 yards from a machine(ransome) rest. (and yes, I still have it) but you can't beat a 586 or 686 either. but a model 57 is also a hard gun and caliber to beat. a friend also had a colt python that was unbelieveable accurate. but I tried about four other pythons and none could shoot as well as my friends. so I stick to Smiths. 14, 15, 19, 685, 686, 24's 27-28's etc. all of the k, L, N frames are hard to beat.

I own a S&W 686 SSR. It has been SCARY accurate. All it ever sees are light .38spl loads.

It would be a toss up between a 6 inch Python, a six inch M19 S&W and an 8 inch Dan Wesson. Using a 125 gr J-words and IMR4227 they were very accurate. I scoped the M19 and got groups at 100 yards that were hard to believe.

About 20 or 25 years ago the gun club I belong to held matches for pistol accuracy at 100 yards for 10 shots. We didn't care whether they were single, double action, semi auto, or what the barrel length was or scope or no scope and cast or jacketed. These matches were held about 6 months if I remember correctly. We shot three different 10 shot groups per week and there were a lot of people involved. The only major thing I remember is that a Dan Wesson 357 won the best group ever and was the only one in all that time to get under 5 inches for any group and it wasn't much below 5. Many groups would win in any given week in the 5 1/2 to 6 inch range and I remember a lot of people getting into an incredible group after 6 or 7 shots and then lose it with the last few. I don't remember if it was a 6" or longer barrel but I think it was a 6. I haven't seen the guy around lately that did it but I probably could find him and I am sure he would know exactly what the gun was and the load and which bullet. This match made a lot of people buy guns that they would never have otherwise bought and just about all brands were represented.

For me, it was a Ruger NM .41 Magnum with the long 6.5" bbl. I like .41's in both S&W and Ruger and have always found them to be as accurate at I can hold. I shoot with iron sights only, and as age weakens my eyes, I've found that my groups have opened up. But occasionally the stars all align, the sun's behind me, and I maintain a consistent grip. The target shown below was shot from the 25 yd line, from a seated position with my legs drawn up, back against a porch support post, with the gun extended between my knees...it's my standard testing position, and duplicated my offhand hunting zeros. That load in any .41 I've tried is a tack driver. If you duplicate it, remember to work up to it, as in all loading efforts. It was safe in my guns, yours may differ. I chrono'd it at 1006 fps with an extreme spread of 24, using a commercially cast LSWC at 210 grains.

Best Regards, Rod

30 yards off sand bags, I can't shoot any better than this, well maybe I could--but the RSRH does a pretty good job at 30 yards.
Thing is it does it over and over again. [smilie=s: [smilie=s:

Dan Wesson 15-2 with 8" barrel.
Although my father's k-38 is a thing of beauty.
Both are far more accurate than I am.
Never did a head to head.
