I have come across an arsenal refurbed Yugoslav M48 in 8mm Mauser for a fair price, and would appreciate advice on:

Brass-Any suggestions? I prefer WW and RP in my 3006 rifles. Any sources for new brass? May try resizing 3006 brass also.
Powder-I have 4064, H335, Unique, 8 # of 4759, 4227.
Primers-I have plenty of WLR and Federal 210M.
Cast boolits-Thinking about something in the 190 gr range and possibly 220 to 240 gr as I have access to 700 yds. Has there been a group buy that might work? Bad news is I have not slugged the bore.

Objective is to shoot in the local 100 yd military cast boolit matches and try the 700 yds stuff. All using the military sights if possible. Thanks

Well I feel kinda stooped after asking all those questions and then going further in the forum. Humblest apologies.

Found the 325365 that was a group buy and it looks interesting and is about the right weight. Only thing is I am not used to using spire points in a cast boolit.

In M48A I use Lee boolit with 16Gr of 2400 and at 100yrd and it that load works much better than Red Dot,Unique or 4227 loads I tried.
I tried the same loads with Lyman boolit and results where the same-2400 was much better.

I'm not sure about your M48 but mine has such short throat that even Lyman boolits GC was inside case so I can't use anything heavier than 165Gr if I wanted to.

Brand new rifle, made and put into storage for many years will have that I'm told.

Interesting about the short throat. I have never made a mould cast w/cerrosafe, but may have to try as am not interested in buying a bunch of experimental moulds.

Thanks for the reply.

Hey Seabreeze,

Give a look to this "Sticky":

I'm running the LEE #324-175-1R in my VZ24 with the 16gr. of 2400 load:

Look at the 3rd edition lyman cast manual. The lyman 160 grain loverin design and WW-760 are a lights-out load. I don't have the data in front of me, but I shoot the max load listed and it hits point of aim at 100 yards with both of my 24/47 Yugo mausers.

For 8x57, I always resize military '06 brass. It gives a thicker neck and slightly less case capacity. Since you have 4759 & 4227, I'd suggest running loads with both of them in the 18 - 20 gr range, for accuracy and use them with pistol primers.

SAECO is the only one I know that makes a 190 gr mold. NOE makes a 323471 simi copy of the Lyman at about 215 gr. I have a full power load with the Lyman mold that groups 2" @ 100 using WC852. Mine is also a M48.

My M48 has a .325 groove diameter, and I use the Lee 205 grain boolit made for the 8 x 56R. I size it to .327 and it shoots 1" groups at 50 yards.

Just ordered the 323471, 326, plain base and think I would like to have/rent a 1 1/2 degree throat reamer. Anyone know a source?

I plan to start w/2400 and then check 4759. Save the 4227 for 44 Mag carbine.

Thanks

Don

The 8x57 has a .424 deg throat, starting at .324, just in front of the case mouth so, a 1.5 deg reamer won't cut anything unless you cut a long freebore.

My son has an M48 and I got to shoot it last week. He used .270 brass and about 16.5 grains of 2400 with a 205 grain boolit. It shot very well with almost no recoil. We were able to consistently hit a 4 inch steel target open sights at 100 yards. I enjoyed it so much I am considering buying one myself. I just am not real comfortable in my ability to chose a decent one. Have fun with it his was a blast.
