can anybody tell me if the Farmingdale Shiloh's have a good chamber or are they with copious throat length?

My Shiloh is a 1980 Farmingdale rifle, serial #32xx.

It was originally a .50-2.5", although marked (and purchased) as a .50-3.25".

The throat was so long that I was unable to seat ANY bullet long enough to reach the rifling while still being in the case. I tried a goodly number of them, too.

The explanation was that the rifles were built with a "paper patch throat", and the patch was expected to fill that loooong empty space between case and rifling. With regular (non-patched) bullets, accuracy was poor.

A few years ago, I contacted Shiloh and they offered a half-price deal for rebarreling the rifle "for any cartridge we make".

The rifle is now a .45-2.1, and I'm much happier with it.

Quite some years ago I shot a Farmingdale marked Sharps .45-120 with the notorious paper patch throat with the Lyman 457125 and FFG Elephant powder. The rifle shot excellent groups using a blowtube.................. I saw no problem with it.

I have a Farmingdale 40-65 which shoots great .. and even it will except a lot of loads my Big Timber 40-65 won't. Chamber seems bigger.. I don't need both if your knowing anyone that wants a 40-65 contact me. Thinking $2k I have a Malcolm style 32" scope I'd sell also. Just sayin.......

If you have access to the rifle it is easy to see the throat especially in a 50 cal.
If the lands start right at the end of the chamber you have a normal chamber. If you see 1/2" or more of no lands ahead of the end of the chamber you have a long throat.
The only Farmingdale I have examined was a 45-2.1 with about 5/8" of throat. I would not be caught dead with something that only works well with paper patched bullets.
