I wanted to use .454 boolits in my Model 92 Rossi. There is nothing local so I ordered 200 250gr .454s to give them a try. Later that day I noticed that I had ordered "Black Powder" lubed boolits rather then "smokeless" lube. My mistake and I can always melt 'em and recast if I need to... but how much would it hurt to shoot them? I'm running a 250gr boolit about 850 fps. Will I'll make a mess in the bore? Or, as I expect, not notice any difference?

The black powder lube will work just fine with smokless loads as long as you don't push the velocity too high, 13-1500 in a rifle is OK.

I use only black powder lube (SPG) in all my smokeless loads. I even use it in my 30-30, shooting 150 grain gas checked bullets at 2,200 fps. It seems to work just fine and I have never had any leading at 2,200 fps. Most of my loads, however, shoot bullets between 850 fps and 1,400 fps and all of them use the black powder lube (SPG).

KirkD's post reflects my exact same experience except that I am using my own BP Universal lube. Shoot your bullets and be happy.

BP lube tend to be softer but is good lube none the less.
I also shoot my own lube in BP and smokeless.
I have gone to @1850fps and have never had any problems what so ever.

I shoot 45 Colt with a Emmerts lube, beeswax, Crisco, canola with 6 grains TrailBoss in my M92 24" , don't know what it chromos out of the rifle but it does 780+- fps out of my 4.6"Blackhawk.

Thanks guys - I'm gonna "Chute 'em."

Kinda thought that was the case - thanks for confirming it for me.
