Hi All,

I have one of these molds and I am thinking about modifying the base. I want to remove the BT and end up with either a PB or a GC shank. If folks have already performed this modification I would like to hear the details and how the boolit performed.

thanks

Have you tried crimping a GC on the base as is?

No. One of the reasons I want to mod. the mold is so I can push the boolit through my lyman lube/sizer.

Only option is PB, you can't add metal to make a gas check style base.

You really think conventional lube is gonna work very well on a tumble lube design?

I've been using a ranchdog tumble lube design in my .454 with great accuracy, and no leading problems. Not only that but I size it down from .460 to .454
Why would you think it wouldn't work?

Just not a lot of room there to hold lube.
I wouldn't have thought it would have worked, might have to try that. Thanks.

This boolit is a boat tail and it is my understanding you can seat a gas check on that boat tail. I have the mold but have not tried to add gas checks to it so far.

I seat a gas check on this boolit and run it through my sizer. Sized .310 and lubed with 2500 I shoot this in my 30-06 and 300 blackout with no issues.

The base fits a gas check perfectly.

"The base fits a gas check perfectly."

Waiting for my molds on back order. I have read that the checks fit right on there and you confirmed it.

I have found I get better accuracy with it with the gas checks. No issue installing them. YMMV

No issues here installing gas check, am currently working up 30-06 load with this boolit using 45-45-10, shot hundreds through the blackout.

I think it's time for me to re-visit this mold. I've used up most of the ones I've got cast already. I did crimp a GC on one just to see if it'd work. I never did get these to cycle my 16" .300blk upper and stay subsonic.

I bought the gun primarily for supersonic, but now that I've used it some, I'd like it to be able to run subsonic as well.

I want to try these in .30-06 as well.

I took the bevel base off a Lee 356 6 banger last weekend so I could use plain base gas checks. End results were very good, but I kept my caliper handy to insure everything was square. I used sandpaper over a glass plate. It took hours. Not an experience I want to repeat. Next time I will go to a machine shop.

I have the mold, it does take a gas check, as is.
The major effect is to lower the B.C. about .025.
I cannot think of a reason to use a gc in subsonic , only for above 1400 fps loads.
I am shooting it in a Handi .308.
Quite happy with it.

I have the mold also and the boolit does shoot smaller groups with the GC at subsonic velocities as well as supersonic.

Thanks for all the posts. I just received a new style (pin and bushings) Lee 300 AAC mold and will try to cast and seat some checks next week.

What loads are you using in 30-06 or .308?

I was using Trail Boss in .30-06. I can't recall the charge off the top of my head.
