I just ran into a set of dies as well as a grundle of jackets for this diameter and am curious if; anyone else is making them, any weights better than others or Flat Base vs Boat Tail projectiles?

I make flat base .284's.

Ooh ooh what dies did ya find, what dies did ya find????[smilie=w:

Depends on your final projectile shape.

With my VLD type shapes I don't like to exceed 168gr & 180gr with the J4 1.340" & 1.440" length jackets respectively...using 99.9% pure lead of course. ;-)

I'm yet to try the 1.200" J4 jackets, but I'm expecting to max out at 140gr's.

Are you sticking around 120's or?

Some Blackmon Dies. I guess I should look up to see what ogive he made for this caliber.

Edit: Looks like they have a 6 ogive.

Do you mind sharing what length jacket you used with each of those weights? What ones did you have the most success with?

No.

but i was thinking of getting a 7mm-08, and thought i could draw down 9mm to 0.282 to swage some 7mm bullets... decided to get a 30-06 instead for various reasons

Joe,

Make sure you find out what maximum length jacket Larry recommended for the die set.

Most M-type dies clap out at about 1.3" in finished projectile length and this complements the BSS press and reloading presses nicely. There are ways of making longer projectiles, but it's time consuming and they are still limited by external punch support.

From what I understand also flat base projectiles don't stretch jackets like boat tails do. Essentially a 1.2" length jacket will make a 1.2" length flat base projectile. I'd look at the Sierra Pro-Hunter series to get an idea of what you can achieve with a 6S ogive in a flat base.

Aaron
