Hi gang,

I bought a couple new molds, and am trying to work up a load for a modern 308 for the small blacktails we have where i live. Mold i have is a 2 cavity C309-170-F from LEE. It is a 170 gr flat nose 309. I cast a bunch of boolets and quenched them, and installed gas checks when i ran them through the sizer with alox, but i am a bit lost on powder.. I have almost no access to any other powder then I have currently due to availability..I have the following powders available to me...

Hodgdon 4350
IMR 4064
Imr 3031
Alliant 2400
Imr hi-skor 800-x

If there is anybody that can recommend a load based on one of these powders, i would be most greatful. I read a harris article that 3031 would do ok as a starting point with 26 gr of 3031 as a substitute.. But would love to see if one of the cast experts here has a recommendation...

Thanks so much,

AlaskanGuy

Start with 24 gr 3031 and work to where accuracy (5 minimum, 8-10 shot groups at 100 yards) goes south. If your .308 has 10" twist barrel that will be at 1900 - 2000 fps. If a 12" twist you might push 2100+ fps. A 1/2 - 3/4 gr dacron filler will make the loads better.

With the 4064 start with 28 gr and do as above.
