Hi All,

Only factory foster slugs I can find for my 10ga are Federals at $2.00 a round. I have done some experimenting with weight-forward slugs in the 10ga but haven't been that successful. Just curious what slugs others are handloading for their 10ga smoothbores. Also would be nice to know what choke your guns has.

thanks

BB

i think federal is about the only game in town when it comes to slugs for 10 gauge i think your best bet would probably be a 0.720 round ball in a wad for a low cost practice option

Hello Brother BikerBeans, I personally do not own a 10 gauge bur was checking to see if I can find someting but no I could not come up with an answer but if I were you I would try some .735"RB in different wads to see the fit in your barrel like this:

after you find a wad with fiction fot that requires 6 to 10 lbs pressure to push it through your cylinder bore then be sure to put one or better yet two nitro cards in wad below RB, cut the wads petals short to the point that it looks like this to be able to help push open the fold crimp!

just to give you a idea as to what I mean.
I.m certain you will find a good combo that will give you good accuracy for deer or bear hunting with a bit of effort costing 15 to 22 cents a pop.

Easiest I found to set up is BPI 10ga VP100 wadcups.
Easiest to get slugs and and wadcups.....
Has it own seal. And I use 69cal Minie slug in it.
Minies for sale on Gunbroker.

Sellers are Blue Falcon in FL and maplewoodbullets in VT.

Minie is hollowbase and about .685", and I expanded it
.700" which then fits that thick sided 10ga wadcup.
Used a roundnose bullet point to expand hollow base.
Slug is about 750gr.

We Use in 32" smooth bull barrel NEF SB2 10ga,
got 3-4" group at 30yds. Ed

I've been contemplating a roundball mold to use in my 10 gauge SxS's however the one I wanna use it in the most is constricted a good bit more then the bore . I think my LC Smith and Ithaca NID would be pretty easy but my W&C Scott chokes are constricted a good bit more then the bore diameter . And being as two of these three guns are damascus I kinda don't want to push the issue to much as far as size of roundball through the choke .

Range trip today, no pics still haven't bought a decent digi camera. What I tried to do was make weight forward slugs using 12ga fullbore slugs in a 10ga wad (remSP10). I put (4) 20ga 1/8" nitro cards in the wad under the slug (slug is solid, not hollow) and glued the wad, cards and slug together. I probably need 16ga nitro cards (the 12ga I have are to big in diameter) as the 20ga are not centered well in the wad. I then load Blue Dot, 10ga gas seal, (1) 1/8" 10ga nitro card, and the glued together slug. Rounds was then roll crimped.

At 25 yards I was getting 1 to 2 inch groups. At 100 yards I was getting minute of pie plate but with an off target flyer, maybe operator error. Not a big sample group, I had about 20 rounds. I think this is a little promising because the holes in the 100 yard target (OSB) are round so the slugs are not tumbling. I didn't chrony these rounds but I shot similar weight slugs & powder charge last fall out of this gun and the rounds chronied in the mid 1300 fps range.
