Got a 41WM plug for the m die, need to turn it down for 40SW. Yikes it won't fit in my drill chuck. Anybody in the DFW area have lathe capability?

If I recall the M plugs have an 8-32 thread. Can you chuck a coupling nut (or something similar) in your drill, screw the plug into it and go from there?

Yes, I can figure out how to do that, just thought for a few $ I could fin somebody to do it right. It's about 4 cuts to get from 0.412 to 0.399 if I remember my HS shop work.

I had a problem trying to adapt one just a few months back. This was without proper tools. Lyman only charged $4 for the right one. I bought a few.

It will take longer to set it up in the machine than to machine it. From .412 to .399 is one rough one finish pass. A tool can be ground to cut the dia and angle all at one time even. Ive done them this way as its easier and faster than cutting dia and matching angle with the compound. Not sure how hard the "M" expander is may take a post grinder to get really good results.

My guess is mild tool steel. The 40 plug is too small. I could anneal, bump it with a big hammer and retemper but I doubt it would come out exact or round. I don't care about the step as I use a different flaring tool. Don't have access to the shop lathe after I retired, might give a call there and ask for a favor. Most likely I'll end up stacking washers & nuts and use crocus cloth.

Gt a friend where I used to work to cut it down. He had to use a carbide cutter. Owe him some 9mm reloads.
