I have 6# of RED DOT that was given to me.

I have a Uberti Win. highwall in 38.55 and a Pedrisoli Quigley in 45-70
and I would like some middle of the road loads.

I have been using sr 47-59, uniqe. H-4198,and some 3031.

I have those loads, anybody know how high I can go with 38-55, I'd like to least get up to factory speed.

No I'm not new to loading. Started around 1961. I know that some people have loads that are faster, I'd like something around 1200,1300 for .249 gr.

I'v been using other powder. Always looking for something better.

Thanks for your help.

Mr. Garfield,

What rifle are you using? It makes a big difference. An old blackpowder one is very different than a Winchester, Marlin or especially an NEF single shot.

Oh yes, welcome to the forum too.

So that means your old school and entitles you to over pressure the cartridge? IMO use Red Dot for what it is, light to moderate economical loads...

Red Dot is a very fast burning powder and double charge or even a slight over charge with such a load will be very unforgiving regardless of the rifle used if you attempt factory level velocities using it. I would recommend against such and suggest sticking with the other powders for such that you mentioned would be a more prudent thing.

However, I have used Red Dot and do use a lot of Bullseye with reduced loads wth very light for caliber cast bullets. These work very, very well and provide a lot of fun and economical shooting. I have pressure tested my loads and a double charge, if I inadvertently use one, will not be over pressure. Red Dot could be a very good powder for use in those 2 cartridges even with those bullet weights if kept at the low end. Just my suggestion.

Well just to let you know that I loaded 10 grs. of red dot in my uberti hi wall and shot it through my chronograph at 1300 , pretty close to factory loaded. That,s all I wanted. Not saying this will work in your old rifles. No recoil and sounds like shooting a 22rf.

Thanks for the update. I think I am going to use some of that wonderful data above and see how it does in my 14in Contender barrel chambered in 375 Win. Like what was stated above, plinking loads are plinking loads. :guntootsmiley:
