If you didn't know, Sams wife Julie is in the hospital from a stroke.
http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?212374-Prayer-request
These two barely get by monetarily and something like this is not in their budget. Sam does not have money to run to the hospital.
I sent a couple bucks to him. Least I could do for one of our veterans.
Anybody else care to throw in a couple bucks?

OK, I don't have Sams blessing on this yet. If you want, my PP is heffy(at)bright.net
I can forward.
If you are more comfortable sending to his PP, pm me.

Hopefully Sam won't get mad at me.

If he does.......
Like I told another, I was married 22 years. I have 7 sisters and two daughters. I am accustomed to having somebody mad at me.;)

I do not know Sam other than reading his occasional posts. I do realize that he has a very tight budget and his wife's illness will strain his finances and energy going forward even more. As he posts surprise over the price of a store bought loaf of bread I am going to suggest that if anyone knows him to ask if he has determined if he qualifies for government assistance for food purchases. Something like 15% of the United States population obtains this benefit with a monthly average of about $270 in benefits. Can anyone here help determine if Sam is eligible and help him apply?

The program is there to help people in need and clearly Sam is in need. If anyone knows the situation and an make a few calls to help figure out what the qualifications are for assistance and can make a few calls on his behalf it would reduce some of the pain he is experiencing.

It was reported that Sam and Julie live in a 12 X 24 log cabin (see his avitar) that they rent.

It is on top of a mountain 18 miles away from the nearest groceries or laundromat.

Since I will not use pay pal I hope someone will tell me where to send some help.

OK, winter is coming in north central Maine and when Julie gets home, she and Sam are going to have to stock up on some food and medicine and supplies to help ensure her continued health.

Coming home is the beginning of a medical ordeal rather than the end.

For those uncomfortable with using Paypal for whatever reasons and given Sam and Julie's location and situation, I'm going to propose the following solution:

Prepaid gift cards from Visa and Mastercard.

I would NOT recommend those "green dot" reloadable cards but instead the basic Visa or MC cards in which you can either set the amount to load on them or the ones that come in predetermined amounts ($25, $50, $100, etc).

Sam can use these at the gas pump, grocery stores, drug stores (prescriptions, etc) and restaurants. And, these can be mailed directly to Sam & Julie.

Yes, there is normally an activation fee and it's around $5. But anyone who put on our uniform and went overseas to get shot at is damned well worth the five bucks it might cost to help ensure their comfort throughout the winter.

We pulled together some years ago to help Sam & Julie through another exceedingly challenging situation. In doing so, it defined the core membership of this family and not just who we were as individuals, but what we are as a family.

We can do this again, folks.

I'm in.

The Page isn't long enough for for me to express all the love and appreciation I have for you folks. I think the word family should be describe in the dictionary with some simple words that say (** FAMILY** please see cast bullets )
I have mentioned to Julie about some help from the forum but she has no idea of the magnitude of the help she / we have been shown.
The prayers for her recovery and the financial help will go a long way to making her life here at camp a lot easier. I don't need her fretting about things at this time. Thank you all for this wonderful thing you are doing.
I am 71 years old and have never in my life ( never ) been associated with a finer group of people.

I would like to offer a couple of Benchrest Shooter/Reloader Blocks for Gray Wolf's benefit. I've made and sold these exclusively to Benchrest Shooters and I normally get $40 per Block, specific to the Caliber requested, and I will ship them at my cost. Since these are custom Blocks according to requested Caliber I will need a small amount of lead time to complete the project(s). I mostly have Wild Black Cherry or Black Walnut blanks with which to craft the Blocks. I will get together with the buyer(s) to discuss style and wood choices. Since this is for Sam, you could offer more than $40 each if you wish. BTW, these Blocks include a rubber backing to aid in staying where you put them and to prevent any marking of "nice" surfaces.

Very nice loading blocks!

From Sam;
" I am beside myself.
Have you seen what is taking place ?
I have never seen such a great group of people. I mean this is unheard of generosity.
I can get a new vacuum cleaner for the camp the one we have is old and you have to do everything 3 times. I will look for a light one and then I can do the work and Julie can supervise from her chair.
She always worries we don't have enough food put up so that will be next, she needs shoes and sneakers to.
Please convey for me if you please that I am so overwhelmed with the generosity being shown."

This morning I talked to Sam. Julie is in the Lewiston Hosp. about 80 miles south of Rangeley. It is a 2 hour drive. Julie is recovering nicely in part because Sam was quick to recognize the problem and took action. As is uasual with a stroke the total damage will not be known for a while but they are hopeful that it is minimal. I dropped an envelope in the mail to Sam this afternoon.

:sad: I can speak from experience to say what I think Sam is going to need.
About four years ago my wife had a stroke that left her with 'Alfasia'. That's
the ability to remember and to speak. She needs time to 'remember' what to say,
but the words come from her "own language". It will take time and a lot of love,
attention and understanding. There are plenty of "items" you can send, BUT
the idea of sending the Visa or Master Card in your amount can do the best for
both of them.

I respectfully request one of you to PM me Sam's address so that I can send one.
Thank you very much.
