Good deal on a barrel

I was at a flea market last weekend and spotted a guy who had two barrels for sale. One was a VG condition 8mm 98k bbl with sights for $25. One was a Shilen large ring Mauser bbl in .308, 1:10 twist, used with a small drill mark in the muzzle from where the front sight base was pegged. $20. Bright shiny bore, sharp lands. If I had had enough money, both would be mine, but I settled for the .308.

I checked the crown, it is about a 2.5 ME. Not new but not awful; I will probably chop off the last 1/8" to remove both the ding from the sight bead and the worn bit, and re-crown.

Should prove fun. Even used that was a very fair price on a barrel that normally runs a lot more.

So.......what bullets do you like for a 1:10 .308 barrel?

About anything that will shoot good at circa 1800 fps. ... felix

I need to look at the places like that I have a Bruno reciever and bolt in the shop that needs a barrel. Good find.

In .30-06, I like the RCBS 165 silhouette & around 22-24 gr. SR4759 and the RCBS 130gr. spire point made for SKS with around 17-18 gr of same powder. There's lots of .30 cal bullets out there that'll shoot good.

Good score jonk, I'd have been in the same boat as you, which to pick with only the pocket money for one. Me, I'd have gone with the 8mm. I've had a hankering for an 8mm 06 for a while, looking around of and on for a cheap junked out action and surplus barrel. May never happen but so what the hunt for the stuffs part of the fun too.

Creekwalker, I've got an 8MM/06 reamer but I'm not sure what condition barrels I have. Never thought I needed the extra capacity of the '06 case but figured it might be useful in changing an 8X57 with a huge trashy throat. If you find something and need the chamber changed, let me know.

I have several take off ( 3 I think) czech 98/22 8mm barrels and cs wood w/ funriture( no floor plate, they went with the actions). They still have sights installed. I have not cleaned them up (still have cosmoline from when a friend pulled them for donor actions) so don't really know the particulars on bore condition. I could be talked into a trade. I might also be interested in working some trade on the reamer also.
