I am looking to make some 45 ACP cast bullets. What Linotype to lead ratio do you use? I was thinking 1 lb Linotype to 4 lbs lead. First time doing 45 ACP so help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

I usually use 1/3 ratio mix linotype to lead, which will give you approx 1% tin, 3% antimony, and 96% lead. I use this for almost all of my handgun loads. 1/4 mix will be less than 1% tin, and fillout may or may not be a problem, depending on the mold and your casting temp. I switched from 1/4 to 1/3 when I started having some trouble with my RCBS 44 250KT, which has a lot of really sharp edges and deep lube grooves. Fillout was much better with nice crisp edges, and sharp bases.

I have used dead-soft lead in 45 acp with great success, so any mix should work. I'd save the linotype for rifle boolits.

Uppers, I use plain Wheel Weight lead for all the 45 cals.
The lino goes into the 30 cal rifle boolits

a 3-1 mix will approximate ww alloy [with a little more tin].
4-1 should work just fine in the 45 acp.

Ive Run Eveything From Pure Lino To Dead Soft In My 45S And Find The Softer Boolits Shoot Better With Less Clean Up So I Dont See Any Need To Waste Lino.

Linotype and Lyman #2 works perfectly well for alloying with pure lead. WW is next to impossible to get in my area, so I have resorted to blending to meet my needs. I NEVER use straight lino for rifle boolits by the way, that is a true waste of Lino. I also blend #2 1/1 with unknown range lead (usually 22 rf cal), and WD for rifle.

I would use 4/1

Agree that 3 or 4 to one, but you will need to add back a touch of tin,
most likely, to get the fill out to be great. .45 ACP is very good with
extremely soft boolits most of the time.

When going for 1/2-1/4 MOA in 30BR benchrest rifles its the way to go.Most cast bullet rifles records are set with Linotype.I have more Linotype than any other alloy so i use it for everything.

Where can you get tin from?

You can add 50/50 solder for the extra tin not a whole lot though, 45 boolits seem to work best when on the soft side in my 45's, bhn of 8 or 9 was hard enough for my loads.

Where can you get tin from? Rotometals has many casting alloys.

Where can you get tin from?

Check the S & S section for cheaper alternatives...Pewter or salvaged solder.

+1

Range scrap is plenty hard for .45 ACP. Save the linotype, you really don;t need it for .45ACP.

I would never waste linotype on a 45 acp it is not needed and pure or nearly pure works fine too.

I use 50/50 coww/pure for my 45acp with no problems. Save the lino for rifle loads.

I can't justify using lino in low velocity pistol rounds...waste of recourses IMHO.. I like mine soft with HP,
Go to the LASC site, there is a wealth of info there on alloy mixes, I like 30:1 for my uses, but that doesn't make me right...I don't know what you are shooting...paper , pigs, looters ???? enjoy our disease and spread the wealth of knowledge on this site:bigsmyl2:

Most 45s can run even pure lead. A little tin, like 25-1, is nicer to cast & gives a little toughness to the alloy for feeding. So .lino, I would go 8-1 or even 10-1, should be fine for any 45acp vel/pressures you care to run. I use range scrap or COWW mixed 3-1 w/ range scrap for my 45acp, plenty hard.
