I'm looking at a low wall original that is supposed to be a good rifle according to the owner. It comes with an original Win mold also but no dies or cases. Is this just a miserable little cartridge to get to shoot accurately with cast boolits as most small bores seem to be? Or can I expect some decent accuracy around 3/4 in at 50 yards for small game. It has a lyman tang sight with a beeches combo front. The smallest cast round I have dealt with is the 25 wcf so far and they can be a challenge.

Marvin,

I don't have any direct experience with the .22 WCF, but it shouldn't be any worse than getting a Hornet to shoot. I have read that the .22 WCF was supposed to have a larger groove diameter than the Hornet, (.226" sticks in my mind) but I cannot remember where I read that. Maybe one of Roy Dunlap's articles from back in the day??

The only .22 casting I have done is with a Lyman 225438 and once the blocks got hot, it wasn't any harder to get good boolits than any other mold I have.

Good Luck,

Robert

The couple I worked with had a .228 bore. Not a lot of bullet selection out there.

I have a similar Low Wall in .22 WCF that I haven't had any time to play with yet, but have been advised of the large .228 bore size by several folks. (Haven't had time to slug mine yet to confirm that though.) If you do pick this one up and start to load for it I'd be interested to hear your results. I'd also be interested to hear what size of "as cast" boolit that original Winchester mould would drop too!

I figured boolit selection will be limited but I see RCBS still makes a. 228 H&I size die so I wouldn't have to make one. I imagine it would be no different than the hornet providing the dimensions are apples to apples. But I have no cast experience with the hornet either, just jacketed many years ago.

I shoot Hornet with cast and I like the 225415? Lyman. 8grns of 2400 comes to mind as my load but I'm at work so I'm winging it as to the exact load. I size mine .225 for my H&R and Model 43. Shoots about an inch at 50yards. Death on varmits with low noise factor to boot. Beats 22 Mag all the way around. A coyote or two have been unlucky enought to show up at the perfect time and they were DRT. Cheap, quite and deadly,I can't beat that combo.........
The H&R is a K-Hornet, the 43 is standard Hornet. Neck size and I built an expander for my Lyman "M" die so the boolits are just snug in the neck. Home made lube,50% bees wax,50% Lithium chassis grease,by weight. 2100 FPS or there about.

.228 diameter was the same as the .22 Savage if one can find some in suitable weights. I believe most .22 Savage bullets may be a little on the heavy side for that small case.

NEI lists some .228 molds. Tim
