Folks,

I just checked Wideners and they have a good deal on 4 surplus powders.

Here's the link: (copy and paste) http://wideners.com/itemview.cfm?dir=278|283|313

Just food for thought...............

The handgun stuff looks promising but the 5010 I have no particular use for. I think it would be too slow even with a .30 cal case full of it to get reliable ignition and velocity. Or?

jonk, IMR 5010 works quite nicely in .30-06 sized cases and those derived from it. It works just as well in the 7.5 x 55mm, the 7.62 x 54R and the 8 x 57mm. The trick is to use a magnum primer, a heavy-for-the-caliber CB, and a small amount of cereal- or poly-filler* (0.3cc in the 8 x 57mm, 1.0cc in the others) and 48 - 49gr. of 5010. You'll find some of this data on the Castpics site and in our archives.

What sort of velocity does one get?

Depending on the weight of the CB, bbl. length and whether you use 48 or 49gr., ~1,750 - 1,850fps. Btw, without a filler, you'll need to use more powder and your extreme velocity spreads and standard deviations will be much higher. With a filler (poly- is better, but powdered bran is cheaper and as near as your supermarket), I can hold standard deviations to 28fps - 32fps.

Thanks, I didn't know that.

I use 215 gr. of 5010 exclusively for both 650 & 750 gr. bullets in my .50BMG.
It was my understanding that the surplus 5010 came from GI .50BMG ammo.

Its slow, I get a muzzel flash from my .50BMG, even with the 36" barrel.

I wonder if 5010 would do well with a 7mm or .300 Mag using a heavy bullet in the Magnum's 26" barrel? It probably wouldn't beat out IMR 8631 or something, but it might get mid-2,000-something velocitys, giving close to .30-06 performance, and be pretty cheap to load.

IMR 8631? I don't know that one.

In 7mm Remington and .300 Weatherby Mags I use 5010's Ball powder equivalent from the .50 BMG, WC860. Works quite well, with full capacity compressed charges giving top velocities with heavier bullets in the 7mm and "service level" but not quite top velocities in the .300 with heavier bullets.

Oh gosh,,,,, me neither.
Sorry about that-- I meant to write '4831'.

Oh well,,,,,
You know what they say about guys with big fingers:

Not only do they make a lot of typing mistakes--
but its real hard for them to pick thier nose too!

You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you really shouldn't pick your friends' noses.

Widener's is down to 5010 surplus and they say that one more shipment is due and that will be the last that they can receive as the government will not be releasing any more surplus powder for sale. The price is $55.00 per 8 lbs. If you need it , you better get some while it lasts. I fiddled while Rome burned and now I can't get the 852 anymore and 4895 has gone way up in price.

it looks like its time to economise on what I have stashed. Anybody have .22 hornet loads or .32-20 fo 5010 or 860 powder? :)

Can you turn that 860 inside out and make it 680? That'll work.
