I took the old girl out to the range at lunchtime today.......All the bullets except one went through the target sideways!....But I kinda knew that would happen since you could drop a bullet down the muzzle about two inches before it hit anything resembling rifling! The 38-40 liner from Brownells is on its way...

Here are a few pictures:

Not bad for a $400 rifle!

You can see where I had to fix the forend here:

A huge chunk was missing so I sanded out a wedge shape and cut a piece of walnut I had laying around...Super-Glued it in place....sanded to shape....and stained with Minwax Gun Stock Red stain.....Not bad!

Nice repair, I like it when the old wood is saved. I was going to mention you might try a counterbore past the worst of the muzzle belling, but the liner should fix it better than that.

not sure where im at when these great deals come around concerning old Winchesters. great find and am looking forward to hearing about your re-liner job and accuracy afterwards. not a bad job at all on the saving of the old wood. NICE overall and at 400 ya cant really go wrong can ya?

The other reason for the reline is the chamber is quite pitted. I'll get a few borescope pictures to show you. It is a nice enough gun that it deserves a new bore and chamber.
