Any one know where I can find a drop in barrel replacement with a 1 -in -66inch twist? For a Tc renagade .54 .I want to shoot round balls only. The barrel that I have is rusted out, The owner shot it back in the 80`s and forgot to clean.I got the gun cheap , and I thought if I could buy a new barrel with a slow twist I could have some fun with round balls. :Fire:

You'll find that reboring the bbl. to .58cal. (with a 1:66 twist) will be less expensive than getting or even finding a drop-in. You may want to contact Bobby Hoyt:

Robert Hoyt at the Freischutz Shop, 700 Fairfield Station Rd., Fairfield, Pa. 17320. His phone # 717-642-6696 He doesn't have a website or email - you have to use the phone. Be prepared to wait for him to shut down a machine and walk to the phone - let it ring. . .

Green Mountain makes drop-in barrels for TC rifles.

You could try calling Ed Rayl in Gassoway, west Virginia. Google him; he has neither website nor email, but will respond to letters.

He 'refreshed' a barrel for me - a .50 Renegade rust bucket turned into a .62 smoothbore, and I was pleased with his work.

My understanding is that Green Mountain has been phasing out building ML drop-in barrels for a few years now and has completely discontinued most if not all. Finding a slow twist 54 Renegade drop-in is going to be hard. There may be some NOS laying around but who knows where. Once in a while you might find one with slow twist listed on fleabay.

Two other options 1) Have it reamed to 58 cal and rifled to your twist. 2) Order a 1" ACF 54 cal in your twist and have a gunsmith fit your breech plug to the new barrel, install the lug, under rib and cut the sight dovetail.

I suggest cleaning that bore as well as possible, then shooting it. You might be pleasantly surprised.

You could also check ebay. They have barrels on there all the time.

What maven said!!!!! Hoyt is the man. Great craftsman, honest deal. He's done a few for me. You won't be disappointed.

I had Bob Hoyt do exactly the same thing for me - rebored a 54 Renegade barrel to 58. Once I got it back I also changed the factory percussion breech plug to one with bigger threads and now it's a flintlock that is properly breeched up without a gap between the plug and the back of the barrel like TC does. Shoots like a champ and cost a lot less than a new barrel.

i'd clean it real good and see if there's any riflings left in it, T/C has shallow rifling anyway, so it may be toast! i'm gona send one to Bob Hoyt as soon as i get the money, and have him make it a .56 smooth bore.

another Bob Hoyt fan here. Bought a .50 cal T/C Renegade with a rusty barrel for cheap just to have Hoyt turn it into a .58 roundball rifle. Excellent work & fast turn around

If you decide to clean the barrel first then fill it with evapo-rust for a couple of days. That will remove the rust and not etch the steel. It worked on a Zouave I got. You will probably have to reblue it as I did. I put the barrel in a capped pvc pipe and filled it with evapo-rust.

I bought one with a rusty barrel but it cleaned up and shoots well. I used a bunch of JB's bore compound. If I knew it could be rebored it would have been. A .58 Hawken would be way cool! I'd have the twist made for a conical, it would make one heck of a hunting rifle. As a matter of fact I already own several .58 caliber molds and have never owned a .58. This forum is a wealth of information!

I have a barrel, I,m rust blueing for a guy.I looked in the barrel & it's is pretty bad.I
called the guy, & he knew about it.He told me he has done as Junior1942 said & shot
it & it shoots very good. You might try that, before you invest in another.

.

Here's a new GM .54 slo-twist bbl F/S: http://www.cainsoutdoor.com/shop/item.asp?item=02135

It's a flintlock bbl, but either the rocklock breech can be replaced with the percussion patent breech from your rusted bbl; or a T/C (flint) lock will drop right into your Renegade's stock w/o much trouble if you'd like to get sparked. ;)

that's a 15/16ths barrel & won't fit his stock. and their 1 inch drop-in barrels all show to be out of stock.

That's cause it's a 50 cal barrel.

That's cause it's a 50 cal barrel.

As bubba.50 tried to point out. http://www.cainsoutdoor.com/shop/item.asp?item=02149

Go to the cainsoutdoor website and check under Green Mountain barrels and scroll through the 3 pages and see what is available and what isn't.

I think the OP was looking specifically for a slow twist 54 T/C Renegade drop-in or replacement.
