A little while back I saw a post from someone, said they like the 265gr. lasercast bullet in there 41mag.

I have a bunch of these boolits without any data. Can anyone help?

My revolver is a Ruger blackhawk with a 6 1/2" barrel, will the BH stablize this heavy of a bullet?

I dont really want to shoot it with high power loads, rather modest loads with heavy boolits. My 13 year old daughter would like to hunt deer with it so I thought that the real heavy boolit at slow speed would give enough penitration. The recoil of a high power load with a light boolit to obtain the needed penitration is a little stiff for her(and me).:Fire:

I used that bullet for a while in my 10" Dan Wesson for silhouette. I can't remember the charge of H-110 I used, but it produced right at 1300 fps, and had pretty stout recoil. In your shorter barrel, I think it would kick too much for your purpose. I would think backing it off to about 1100 would still shoot through any 3 deer. Probably 2400 or 4227 would be better choices at that speed. You might start running into stability problems, though. I think a good 210 or 220 grainer with about 8 grains of Unique would kill any deer if shot through the lungs, and be a lot more pleasant for her to shoot.

If the noselength is .400"+-start with, H110- 21 gr and work up.
My SBH Hunter 41 mag with a 265gr cast likes 23.0gr at 1400+,other than that I have no other loads.
Blue Dot 12-14gr will get 1100-1200 fps

try 8 grains of unique, 7 grains of 231, 9 grains of hs6 or 13 grains of 2400. These loads have worked for me with 230s but to be honest ive never shot heavys with light loads in the 41 they should all be more then safe though.

Another thing to consider with the heavy bullet at low velocity is the long barrel time. Unless your daughter is really an expert shot, variation in grip is certainly going to produce serious vertical stringing. On the other hand, the 265 gr. GC from Leadheads that I used was the most accurate commercial cast bullet I have shot in the .41.

Agreed, Leadhead's specifies the best commercial alloy for their boolits. Every foundary batch is verified qualitively and quantatively before delivery. I do not know if their alloy delivered varies based upon application. In other words, they might have different individual specs for that delivered that day. ... felix

You might give this a spin.

8.8 grains unique is very accurate in my ruger bisley under a 255GC boolit.

With the light bullets--I assume you mean like the 170gr- recoil is not so bad but muzzle blast goes up at least to me-- Herco- Unique - 800x will all work -- some of the slower powders do not like to be loaded down. the 170gr will go deeper than I realized-- and will work for deer -- a pass through is common on a broad side shot and chest on all the way to the last rib --not trying to get you to use them just commenting on the 170-- the cast bullet will of a certainity go deeper-- So what velocity do U want? What powder are you using?

With that heavy a bullet you won't need any more than 800-900fps to get the job done, penetration wise, and could probably settle for even less, as long as the shooting distances are short, say, 50yds or less. Unless she's a REALLY good shot, that should be her limit, anyway.

I have a load that will shoot a 210gr cast SWC bullet about 900fps and it will penetrate a deer's chest, broadside, very easily. I would have no concerns about taking a quartering or facing shot with that load. Rather than quote the load, since the bullet weight is a lot different than the one you want to use, I'll suggest that you search the on-line load data (powder manufacturers, etc.) and look for loads in the 800-900fps range. Experiment a bit and find one that's accurate in your revolver.

If your daughter is recoil-shy, it might be in your best interest to use a lighter bullet. It will surely reduce recoil, you'll find more load data available, and adequate penetration won't be an issue, even with loads in the 800-900fps range. Cast SWC-style bullets penetrate remarkably well.

Stew

Thanks everyone for all the help.

Did find out that my BH won't stabilize the 265gr. over 6gr. of Trail Boss, they start to key hole at 10yards and at 150 they are ALL over the place.

Daughter stepped up to the SRH 454 with 360gr GC over full load of Trail Boss. The heavy SRH keeps recoil down and with the heavy's we are now chasing elk.
