My type 99 has a little step on the barrel where it meets the receiver that is missing on yours. That step may have been removed when they set the barrel back.

The 7.7 case is a lot longer than a .300 savage. It is longer at the neck to shoulder juncture than a .300 savage case. To set the barrel back to rechamber to .300 savage, the barrel shoulder would have to be totally removed. I don't think that the gun has been rechambered to 300 savage. The normal rechamber to them was to 30-06. See if the bolt will close on a factory loaded 30-06 case and if it closes, the chamber is probably an 06. It appears some shoulder was removed and some jap chambers were sloppy at the base end and were bigger around than an 06 resulting in a bulged case near the head. I wouldn't shoot anything until I had a better idea of what it is and have you removed the barreled action and looked under the barrel for a caliber restamp?

I also have a Jap . Mine also had been re chambered to 300 Sav. I was sure of the chamber so tied it to a wheel and tire and fired it with a long cord. To find out what you have I suggest that you melt some candle wax , Spray the chamber with a silicone spray and push it out with a bore filling wooden rod. This is a substitute for the real chamber casting material. It will tell you what you have as close as you need to know. As in is it a 7.7 no it is to short. Is it 30-06 and so on. I re chambered mine to 308Win. Just a hair deeper than 300Sav. and brass is easy to find. All a win win deal. Also mine had a little head space so it needed to be addressed. Load mine with .311 and it shoots great. One of my go to guns in fact. After 10 years of shooting cast and jackets the bore is polished and cleans up well.

But can anyone tell me if it looks like the barrel has been set back from the pics.

I had a 99 that was set back for .300 savage. It did NOT look like that. It didn't have a bezel like that, for one thing. The gunsmith also nice enough to stamp ".300 SAV" on it. I'll see if I can find a photograph. But never say never about an Arisaka -- they went through some odd changes during the war and after.
