Shot some skeet with this bad boy but mostly I've been making buckshot loads and shooting patterns at 25 yards !

I use a Remington or Federal case trimmed to 2 7/8" , 30 grains of SR7625 , a Remington SP-10 wad , a 209 primer (WIN , REM STS or CCI) and 1 1/4 ounces of shot normally #6 or #8 . For buckshot I use everything the same except the shot and load either eight "000 Buck" , twelve "00 Buck" , sixteen "#1 Buck" , twentyeight "#3 Buck" or thirtytwo "#4 Buck" . The buck loads are closer to 1 1/2 ounce but it seems to do okay in all three of my short 10's !

This thing seems to like 000 , 00 , 1 , 3 and 4 buck !

Simplicity and deer killability were my main objectives and I'd say they were met as long as I don't shoot at over 30-35 yards .

We've been Damage Control Hunting for deer and bear on a couple pieces of property since early july . And we've taken a few so far . So tonight I loaded 10 rounds with 000 Buck and 10 rounds with #1 Buck . I have a thick little funnel leading out to a soy bean field I'm gonna sit a couple days next week . The deer will be within bow range if I can see them so they oughtta be just about right for my buckshot loads in that old LC !

Thanks !

Thats actually my third LC . This is a Quality 2 Syracuse style . The others I have are a Ideal Grade 12 and a Field Grade 12 that was damascus and sent to Westley Richards and now has fluid steel barrels !

This is also my third 10 gauge double .

Have an Ithaca NID 10 gauge 2 7/8" 32" fluid steel ful and full . As well as my grandfathers old pre 1890 hammerless W&C Scott 10 gauge damascus 2 7/8" 30" full and full .

I would like to find a decent Parker hammerless 10 gauge with damascus barrels and quite possible a Lefever .

I remember as a kid shooting my grandfather's L.C. Smith 12-gauge at blackbirds in the tree next to the house. Both barrels a the same time. Now, *that* had a kick to it.

Had one of my 444's along just in case I saw one past 40 yards . This is a circa 1967 rifle I relbued and refinished the wood as it was about 3% blueing when I bought it . Shooting the Lyman 429244 HP with a goodly charge of H322 .

I shot the right barrel which had my handloaded #1 Buck with 16 pelletes . I aimed right at the whithers of the deer as she was to close to go in from the side . Anyway it looked like 10 or so went in right where I aimed . When I skinned the deer about 2 inches of the backbone was gone there . I also found a pellet in the elbow of one of the front legs .

Well I realize 4 yards really isn't a fair test . But next time I'll go with #3 Buck in the right barrel and 000 Buck in the left barrel !

Congratulations! It is always good when a plan comes together and results in meat for the freezer. I have not hunted with my either of 10 gauge guns (Baker and an Elsie). You may inspire me to go out with the Baker.

Lets see with my W&C Scott 10 I've killed deer and dove , as well as trap and skeet birds . With this LC I've killed the lone deer and some skeet birds . I have an inclanation to pop a couple squirrels and rabbits with my W&C just because it was my grandfathers !

The deer I killed with the W&C a couple seasons back .

I had thought this old LC Smith was the oldest gun I'd killed a deer with .

But a day or two ago I was able to date my grandfathers old W&C Scott 10 gauge that I killed a deer with about 3 seasons ago . It was made in 1881 or 1882 .

The old W&C is also good on dove . Well that is if they're flying !

Depending on how the year goes with the buckshot I have a pair of 16's I wouldn't mind plowing a deer with as well !

Ones a 1911 Parker GH damascus and the others a AH Fox A grade that was made the first year Fox was made in Utica .

Here is an old Ithaca for you to look at.

This is from when Baker and LC Smith went together and founded Ithaca Gun Company. LC provided finances and WHB provided gun design. This is a New Baker Gun, 10gauga, twist steel barrels and rebounding hammers. I have not used it on game but because of this thread, I am considering it.

Well this evening I went back to the same place I was at Labor Day monday evening !

I was just about ready to start getting down and a deer walked out beneath me and I dusted it with my old Parker GH 16 gauge damascus gun shooting my handloaded shells with 10 of the #1 Buck pellets , Remington SP-16 wad and 21 grains of Unique . At the boom of the gun the deer folded up as I aimed at the base of the head and since it was less then 10 yards from the base of the tree well you get the picture . When I fired I heard another one behind me walking around so I laid the Parker down and picked up my circa 2001 Marlin 444 loaded with the Mountain Molds Mt Sourdough 433-425GC bullet I had cast and pushed with 37 grains of RL-7 . Another one stepped out above me by about 15 yards and I drilled her behind the shoulder . She went 10 yards and fell back in a small ravine !

I had no idea you were into old doubles. Not only that, but you have some nice ones.

Do you shoot black powder in your Damascus Barrels?

We are having an influx of "Micro Doves" out here in CA. I have seen exactly two full sized Mourning Doves this year and both were in my Front yard. The only other birds I have seen flying were the little ones which aren't much bigger than a Starling.

They all must have left Bakersfield and just bypassed us and went to Mexico.

No I won't use BP in any of my shotguns that aren't front stuffers . Typically I use one of the SR powders or Unique .

Yes I've been messing with doubles for well over 40 years .
If there's a way to waste money on guns I've most likely tried it !

Incidently outta the about 250 deer I've killed in my lifetime so far , I've only shot at 4 with buckshot . And out of the four I only hit the 3 you see in this thread !

Man, I'm jealous of that 10 gauge LC. I have dad's old 12 gauge field grade and have retired it before I broke it. In high school, I passed up a 12 gauge LC Smith hammer gun with really clean 26" Damascus barrels because of the Damascus barrels. I mean the whole gun was clean. Wish I knew then what 50 years would bring. I been kicking myself ever since. $50 would have taken it home then./beagle

I have a soft spot for good ole doubles and the 444 marlin as well. Nice deer also. So, you're already stocking the freezer.
That buckshot should be a bit more effective than about 5 yards though. :)

Good thread, nice pictures of nice old double guns. Don't mean to hi jack the thread but do have one question.
Most of the old doubles shown are damaskas guns. How can you tell if a damaskas (yup, misspelled again ) barrel is safe to shoot.
Have a great old German hammer gun with such barrels. Years ago did shoot it with black and had no problems but all one reads anymore is that " don't do it ".
Any thoughts ???

I have a 16 gauge German hammer drilling that I shoot a fair amount on paper and I use smokeless in it as well !

FWIW of my 3 ten gauge guns only two are damascus , of the pair of 16's only one is damascus .

The 12 and 20 Sterlingworths are both fluid steel . So with al that being said the majority of my doubles are not damascus . Although I do have others that aren't pictured .

Frankly if I had or have a damascus gun I'm afraid to shoot smokeless in then I'm quite certain I'd be a little apprehensive to shoot BP as well .

There was an article in an American Rifleman back in the 60's I believe where a fellow took 4 shotguns I believe 2 damascus and 2 fluid steel and shot the same loads in them all but progressing upwards in pressure etc .
Anyway if my memory serves the two fluid steel guns ruptured the barrels and he was still going with the two damascus guns . The article said something to the effect of he had surpassed what he consodered a safe level and the two damascus guns were still going strong .

Now does that tell us all damascus guns are capable of this ? Certainly not it just tells us that on that day with those four guns that was the outcome . It also tells us Parker made very good damascus barrels as all 4 guns were Parker's !

Now as for my guns I shoot lower pressure smokeless loads . There's a company in northeast Pennsylvania called "RST" I believe that sells low pressure smokeless shells for older doubles be it damascus or fluid steel .

I know a good many fellows that shoot smokeless in their damascus guns and of those fellows a good many are hammer guns .

This is kind of a relative thing . It's only relative to people who make it relative . I have told the world what "I do" , I am not saying you should do this and I am not saying you or whomever shouldn't use BP .

However for my own old shotguns and rifles I will refrain 100% from using blackpowder .

Does anyone have any idea of what those lighter smokeless loads would be.
I would actually like to shoot the old double again and don't think I would have any qualms with using black but if I could come up with some kind of 12 ga. "mouse fart " load. It wouldn't have to be even the equivalent of even a light 20 ga. load. Just something that would be safe beyond any doubt.

I suggest you start another thread and ask .

My 10 gauge loads were worked out by one of the gun writers on Handlaoder Magazine .

The loads I use in my damascus 16 were derived from the load manuals and I just reduced some .

Generally anything below 9000 PSI would be good .

Nice guns, funny how the old ones grow on you.I would love to have a big bore damascus. My old Spanish 10 has the classic to much steel in the barrels and choaked full and fuller but gave good service in my younger waterfouling days.

The guy I got the LC from also had a Spanish SxS 10 gauge made back in the 60's or 70's for Sloan's Sporting Goods it was stamped on the barrels "Pride of Spain" .

I really want a nice Parker EH grade hammerless 10 gauge and dare I say it at some point a Parker hammerless 8 gauge !

Looks like the Parker GH and AH Fox A 16 gauge guns will be carried along . Think I'll also have a rifle in the truck so after a little dove we can go on and deer shoot some as well !

Shot this bad boy twice !

The first shot he was coming directly towards me and about 20 yards I let him have it with a load of handloaded #3 Buck seems to me I was putting 25 pellets in each shell . For the second shot he had turned broadside and I popped him this time with a load of handloaded 000 Buck , there are 8 pellets in these I believe .

He made it about 30-40 yards from the second shot back into some rather nasty stuff .

I was hunting with some friends in a county I'd never killed a deer before . We were doing man drives .

Plan to end off the season next saturday with them same as I did last year .

Well the regular Virginia deer season has been over in my county for about a week .

But squirell and rabbit season is stil in until the end of February . I may very well see if I can knock over a couple squirells and a rabbit or two with my maternal grandfathers old W&C Scott 10 gauge just happen to already have ome handloads with #4 shot !

Some good info in The Doublegun Journal on those old Damascus barreled things.

Now, I see lots of links on this stuff have already been posted. I have a .pdf file of loads worked out by Sherman Bell that I can send in an email but cannot post here in this message. Sherman Bell and Tom Armbrust did some interesting pressure work on Damascus guns in The Double Gun Journal-a must read!

Incidentally, as part of my civic duty I am offering a free service to help rid the hunting fields of these old Damascus barreled death traps. Send them to me and I will dispose of them on my Damascus barrel unwrapping machine. I will even pay half the shipping.:kidding:

Oh yeah my load in the 1884 Parker hammer gun was .

Remington hull
Remington SP-10 wad
twelve 0 Buck pellets
six 9mm cases full of Winchester Grex
30 grains SR7625
Winchester 209 primer

That guns pretty much choked IC/M and throws some very very nice patterns at 25 yards . The deer in the pic were shot at 15 and 28 yards .

The 1881 Parker 10 gauge lifter got here today !

Got it today !
The barrels appear to be uncut and the gun isn't as loose as I thought it was going to be . Should be no major problem to tighten it back up . Guns on a #3 frame and the bores have some small pits but not so bad .
It does however have a stock from some other brand gun that was made to work on this gun .
