So my buddy was given this by his brother and he is not sure what to do with it. Anyone know the caliber? Says 36P on the side.

My guess is a mold for a .36 Colt Navy. Picture of the cavities?

Yep, that's what it appears to be.

So is there any real use for it if he does not have one of those?

I downloaded and blew up the 1st pic for curiosity. the sprue plate says Colts Patent. Probably pretty old (hinge type is older). If he want's to sell it, it is possibly valuable to some collectors. Don't sell it cheap or until you research what it might be worth. I don't know where you might find that information though. This site is full of people that know more than anyone, anywhere else, about pretty much anything related to bullet casting (and a lot of everything else). Keep checking for replys.

They made Colt Navy revolvers from 1851 to about 1870 and assembled more from parts after that and each 36 cal gun came with a mold so there were plenty of them made. That one is in rough shape and if I had it for sale i would ask $70 or so just because it was old Colt. It loks to be just a collectors item and not a usable mold although I have made bullets from these in somewhat better shape.
