Could not argue with the the gift horse ... picked up a jug of 4831 for next to nothing ....
Is this powder viable in my .308 Garand ? .... thought I saw some references here and there but also some negatives ...
thanks

Digger,
Be careful! Garands aren't suppose to use powders of the 4895 burn rate range. I'd read up on that before stoking up any rounds for your treasured M1.
I hope this helps,

The 4831 will work but 180 is about the minimum weight. The gas port psi will not be a problem as it is with jacketed loads. I prefer a heavier cast like 311299/311284 for use with 4831. However, suggest you start with 38 gr, use a 3/4gr dacron filler and work up to functional reliability. Best accuracy will probably be at that point.

10-4 on that Mr. Gibson , Have a 311332 , 311299 and a 311365 molds to play with ,... (toy's ![smilie=f:) and I hear all the stories of bent op rods , beating on the bolt , etc. .
The 4831 was next to free and I could not say no ..... but the learning curve is so enjoyable with all the advice here , information that is not found any where else.
Thank you

I found 41.5 IMR 4831 with a 200+ boolit with Dacron was the ticket for my 30.06 M1. It felt a little funny, I can't explain it. It was very accurate. I like Varget much better.

This just is not so ! BvT
In my 3006 I use 40 grains of 4831 under 200 grain cast.It shoots good and about quarter size groups at 75 yards. With sand bags for rest this is about as close as I can hold the gun.I am just a shaky old man that use to shoot some better when younger

As one who has burned a lot of 4831 with 311284 in cal .30 Garands ... I think it's way too slow for the .308 cartridge. See Bruce B's thread above regarding the M1A; his loads should be a good starting point for the Mk2-1.

Yes, it is........... using conventional data and loading techniques.
