View Full Version : Another Mosin project
1944 M44 laminated stock. I don't think it was ever issued. The stock had some rack scuffs on it so I just finished stripping it.80513

Have always been told that the big ugly gap was on purpose. Let jus know how it holds/shoots/etc The big gap is one of the uglier features of the Mosins.

8061380614Well I like it. What do you folks think. Two coats of "Gun Stock" colored stain Three coats of 50/50 orange oil and bees wax. Then one coat of linseed oil. Worked on the trigger just enough that the rear of the bolt does not pull down when you pull the trigger. Going shooting this afternoon.
Took it apart this morning and found a lot of pressure on the forearm. Wasn't real happy with the way it shot yesterday. So I relieved the barrel channel and removed the bayonet. Hand rubbed three coats of the orange oil and bees wax in with real fine steal wool. Then let it sit in the sun a couple hours. Stock looks really nice now.

I'm gaining on the shooting, this is 100 with iron sights with Bulgarian 148 ball. About as good as I can do
Picture doesn't do the stock justice. The more polish I put one the better it gets.

You keep shining on that Ruski and you won't want to take it out side. Looks fine to me and seems to shoot quite well for ball ammo. Is the T53 a Chinese or Russian build?
This one is a Russian M44

try the Czech silvertip, it has always grouped better than the other surplus ammo. not as big of a fireball though.

Nice work I've been debating on refinishing my mosin.
My Boy has a 91/30 with a laminated stock I've got it stripped and a couple coats of oil. He wanted it done after seeing mine. It's starting to look good also. I'm ashamed of myself,I spent so many years just walking past the Mosins and giving them a brief grunt and walking away. A month ago I had none now I have 4.

Could you explain the trigger job you did? How do you like it?
Thanks.

You may want to float the barrel w/ some oiled cork shims
http://www.smith-sights.com/accurizing-the-mosin-nagant-a-year-later.php
I did it to my 91/30 used cork for the shims and shot PPU ammo soft points and had three rounds touching at 100 yards. Shot a 185lb Hog that didn't make it 30 feet. I just started casting for my rifles and I'm having great luck developing a load for the Mosin w/ 24 g of SR4759 and a 185g lee .312 mold. Best of luck, stock looks great...
