This is what I decided on but I'm not sure what it is - it doesn't look like a cutdown Vetterli. Could that stock with the pistol grip be from another rifle?
It came with a box of goodies.

It appeares to me to be an original sporting rifle. Except for the action the rifles made for the military that I have seen look nothing like that.

It's definitely a Vetterli .41 but that stock puzzles me.

That rifle looks very similar to the one I was looking at on the Allan's Armory website today. Pistol grip, lighter wood on the forearm, cut down barrel with fixed sights.

I checked that site and it does look similar. I know that many Vetterlis were sporterized in the early 1900's- this was probably one of them.

I think it would make a good photo to stick some Weaver bases on one of those with Super Glue and mount a long 24X target scope - for a Vetterli Varmiter.
