I been wanting to learn how to pillar bed an action and other basic gunsmith tasks. So I bought a 1944 91/30. I like the Ruger Scout Rifle but didn't want to spend the money. I cut the Mosin barrel down to 18 inches and bought a 11 Degree crown cutter. Shortened the forearm and re-cut the groove in the stock for the front barrel band spring. Bedded the action and worked on the trigger until its a safe and consistent 3 lbs. put the steel end back on the handguard. and shortened the cleaning rod. Took the rear sight off and there is an 11mm groove cut in the barrel that excepts a .22 scope mount. Plain high rings would have worked. 2.5 Ncstar pistol scope AKA LER scope. And I have a Scout Rifle for about $200.00. And it shoots well also. Target is 100 yards with Bulgarian light ball. The bolt handle you need to understand I had a piece of steel that would have looked right. But I had to add something interesting.

Now that there is a rifle I would BE PROUD OF!!!! The wrench adds a nice unique touch to it, also kudos for the nice woodwork. Some naysayers while stop by I am sure, however, I am a big believer in the "It's your gun, do what you want to it" as long as one does it safely. I may have to look @ the local pawnshop and see if they are still letting the 91/30's out the door for 91$ total!!!

Since the beginning of time, Sears has warranted all of their Craftsman tools. If it breaks they'll replace it, so haul the bolt into your nearest Sears store and claim that it has ceased functioning........then get back to us.

Nice rifle!

Nice job! Personally, I can't get upset about someone "butchering" a Mosin - as long as they do a decent job of it. I think I'd consider some type of muzzle device for that rifle - either a flash suppressor to reduce the fireball, or something like the Noveske KX-3 'Flaming Pig' to direct the blast forward.

Art has many forms of expression, nice work. Just a thought- M1A Flash Suppressor and build bipod with attachment using two big Craftsman screwdrivers, folding to stock. Life is so very short, have fun! Gtek

personally I think its great.. you have created a rifle with your own personal touches to fit your needs .. and yes craftsmenship was involved and is now advertised

Haven't shot any cast yet but I will. The barrel slugs .312. I have the Lee 155 312. It will shoot MOA @100 with Winchester White Box 180 Round nose. I'm left handed so the bolt handle is a lot easier to get to reaching over the gun.

Well, like I said when I drilled through the engraved tangs on my Buffalo Bill and Legendary Frontiersman Commemoratives to put soule sights on - this is a shooting rifle, when I'm dead the next guy can piss&moan about how I bubba'd up the rifle...

The Craftsman wrench is a nice touch.

Now this gives me a great idea...if ever I need to turn down a bolt on a husqvarna, go to Home Depot and buy a Husky wrench. LOL

I like it. The bolt handle is too long for my taste but I think the wrench is genius!

Lets see did I see one just like that the other day...NOT! It is unique and personal. You did a very nice job. I like shorties in both rifle and handgun. Yours is exceptional.

I've known some nagants to get a bit tougher to cycle after heating up. The longer bolt will help get the leverage for that, especially with a left hand.

Very functional and unique. The more I learn about Mosins the more KI respect them.

Thanks for the positive feedback. I was a little shy about posting this for fear of getting beat up. But like I said I want to learn and the Mosins are the cheapest thing around right now. Plus I like what I came up with. I had planed to just paint the stock. But after stripping it I decided to just rub it with oil. Hey just a heads up and old gunsmith told me to use cheap oven cleaner to remove stock finish. And it works great.

Interesting! Glad you posted pics. Think I will stay with my M38 as issued however with the exception of the KCSO modified bolt handle. I am not a real big fan of muzzle blast.

I like it!! I got 3 Mosins...one similar to yours with short barrel, scout scope and an ATI stock...it's loud, big flash and a hoot to shoot...got one that is another ATI conversion with the ATI bolt handle, scope mount and a 16x scope...bbl is full length and it has a bipod...it's really accurate and fun to shoot...then the "original"...and I think I'll leave it alone...The other 2 were sportarized before I got them and I'm glad someone saved a couple of decent guns that were junk when they started...my original is great to shoot...kicks like a mule but again...a hoot to shoot. I respect purists and I respect folks that like to modify things...room for everyone..

That craftsman bolt handel is just great! It really fits because you crafted that rifle.

I agree that something on the end of the barrel makes it more pleasant for shooting
Maybe something to inspire ya.

Cooper said that a scout rifle should have a forward mounted low powered scope, backup iron sights, loaded via stripper clips or detachable magazine. And able to hit reasonable sized targets at reasonable ranges.

Use a stubby wrench; problem solved.

Nice job! Personally, I can't get upset about someone "butchering" a Mosin

These things-the Mosins-I've looked at a few of them and while they have a demonstrated history of effectiveness I don't know that you could "butcher" one. The remaining tooling marks (er, big, nasty bastard file marks I mean to say) on the receivers of most of the examples I've seen...sheesh, it looks like someone butchered a perfectly good piece of steel! Now admittedly the people probably only had a file, hammer and vice to build them with. They work but they're not pretty at all...

The Scout rifle from Ruger is a brilliant concept but it's a woods gun, a shooter and user and it should be a $400 gun at most, not a $700 one.

You've undermined and undercut Ruger-showing what a scout class rifle should be and should cost, that is to be commended!

And I like the wrench too.

Any chance you could build me one in .308?
