I was just looking at a Rossi puma in 454 Casull. How is it possible that a 1892 reproduction rifle made for BP ammo can handle a full house load, like a cor-bon 300gr. at 1850FPS? The reloading info that came with my FA 454 lists some loads that almost reach 60,000. I would like the pistol/rifle combo but am a little afraid of the Rossi. Does anyone have one or experiance with it?

Paco Kelley thinks so: http://www.gunblast.com/Paco_Legacy_454.htm

I have one in 45 colt and it is my favorit rifle for plinking and Cowboy shooting. A couple of years ago I loaded some hot loads for a dear hunt. All I did for that was use 454 loading data and reduce the load by 10% for the shorter case. Results were good as I got good accuracy and around 1750 with a 255 gr slug. Worked well for deer as I got a nice blacktail in heavy timber with it at 40 yards. One shot down it went. The load was a little unplesant to shoot a lot with as it kicked quite hard in my light rifle I own.

Amazing, ain't it?

I too was sceptical, but I bought one a few years ago. I've put some very high pressure loads through it, and it handles it as advertised. I've chronographed the Lyman 452651 335 gr. boolit at 1900 fps. I think of it as a lightweight 45/70.

It's biggest limitations are COL, those big long boolits have to be seated deeply to feed correctly.

Just keep talking about the .454 Casull, force me to buy one... You guys are going to run me into bankruptcy!

Sure do love mine. It's very accurate too, With 45 Colt cases get 3 in less than an inch at 50 yards, iron sights, Lyman 452374 Devastator over 6 grains of bullseye.

Not really helping you say no huh?

I'd imagine that the recoil is just a bit stout - I've got a 1982 Browning in
.44 mag and it is pretty snappy. I'd assume the .454 Casull is more of the
same.

Thank you everyone for the info. Looks like I will have to add the puma 454 to my collection.

The write-up on gunblast sounds like it must be a strong gun that will hold the pressure of 60,000 but I bet recoil is plenty stiff.

Recoil is relative, I shoot a lot of .338 and .330 magnum, so the recoil of the Puma doesn't bother me much. It's not unusual for me to put 50 to 100 rounds through it in a single session, and I've never gotten the shoulder bruises that the .338 produces. I once owned a Marlin 1895 in 45/70, loaded it hot with 500 grain cast boolits, and it was really a kicker. The Puma is nothing like that.

It has caused my thumb to scratch my cheek when I get sloppy with holding the rifle correctly.

My Rossi 92 in .44 mag is the only rifle of mine that's ever given me a bruise on my shoulder. Even my .375 H&H has never done that. I'm *much* happier with my Rossi now that I have a slip-on recoil pad on it.

I just bought a Puma 16"bbl large loop lever sadle ring, blue weighs 5 lbs
it is .45 Colt, put 60 rounds thru it, got pretty good groups at 50 yards offhand.
This will be my walking brush close range carry gun for whitetail.
BTW it kicks more than I thought it would, has that little metal butteplate.
I might add a rubber slip on to give it a little more lop.

I had one in 45LC with a 24 inch tube. Traded it off to a buddy who found that a case full of 296 with a 300gr XTP shot little tiny groups. Velocity is around 1600fps but it sure will get your attention with that narrow steel butt plate.
