I have a 45-70, (new) 34" barrel, 1-18 twist on a #1 RB. I will fire cast of 465 to 535 boolits. Was using 2F powder at 60 to 65gr loads, 200 to 300 yds. I made a big mistake of ordering 1F powder, I talked to them and was told it would be OK only it has a slower burn rate. Will it be OK to use?????????? beng

I use 1f in my .50-70, .45-70, .40-65 and .40-82. I get better accuracy with it.

Heck no you can't use that stuff, so just send it to me and being the nice guy I am I would be willing to properly dispose of it for you! :kidding:

I had about 4 lbs of 1f left over from about 20 years ago I had been using in a small noise making cannon (1" bore) and I used that in my 45-90 with the cast Lee 459-500-3F with really good results. Shoot that stuff and enjoy it, it will work!

beng, your probably not aware of this ... Fg powder was the prescribed grade for all the 44 and 45 large case calibers in old BP loading tables. It's only of recent times that BPCR shooters have drifted over to FFg.
For a fact, I shoot FA1 blasting powder in my 45-90 - with accuracy all the way to 1000yds! Blasting powder is not sporting grade powder - smokier and heavy on the foul but the stuff SHOOTS!

I think the difference is, the powder of today is not as good quality as the old brands. Wish I had some pounds of all the old stuff to test. Donations accepted!

The 1f of old days was closer in grain size to what goex calls 2f today. That being said pour the same charge weight of the 1f as you were using 2 compress to let the bullet seat to the same depth, you'll likely not see any difference on the target.

Shot my personal best of 27 in silhouette 2 weeks ago in Idaho, using 1f Swiss in a Browning BPCR in 45/70. Too bad I had to finish up on those pesky chickens...

FA1 isn't blasting powder. It is fireworks powder and is still made of the same ingredients as sporting powder. Blasting powder is made with sodium nitrate and is pitiful in guns.
