Remember that you are fitting a bullet into a fired case, and that is why the case neck is about three thousands over bullet diamiter.

What you need to do is make an expandiron to make your necks slightly over sized on a new or resized case. The bullet must side in-and-out in it. The benchrest shooters use an expandiron on their cases necks to make them all uniformly oversized before they turn their case necks.. One expandiron in about 0.226 works for all 22 centerfire calibers. One expandiron in about 0.267 would work for all 6.5 calibers. Someone like K&M Products can sell you a basic unit, and the various spuds you might want to go with it. If you have acess to a lathe someone can probably make something up.

I think I ordered the special tap from Manhaten Supply. Just calculate the tap drill to use.

You could also load a round without powder or primer. Then take the cartridge and place it on the anvil portion of a vise and tap the case neck gentlly with a small hammer as you rotate the cartridge until the bullet is loose and falls out of the case. Then drill and tap the case through the primer pocket with the appropriate drill and tap.... See: no expandirron needed. Just a bit of farting around.

FYI: You have just gotten a lecture on how to fart around constructivley from and old fart.

I have the original Stoney Point gauge. I too bought a proper tap to make some of my own cases. Yes, you have to modify the case neck too. But it all works!

There's no need to use a expandiron just use a case fired in the gun you want a modified case for, the neck should be
big enough for a loose boolit fit.

If you need the neck ID larger than a fired case just seat a cast bullet .001 larger than you want the ID to measure then "pull" the bullet with an inertia type bullet puller. Allowing for about .001" springback in the brass you'll end up where you want to be.
Good Luck,
Rick

What's the tpi of the tap for the hornady oal gauge? I'm looking into doing the same thing without spending 7.00 on each piece of brass.

It is indeed a 5/16 36 threads per inch or 36 T.P.I. I have also adapted several and have no problem if using a piece of brass fired from the gun you are checking.
You can also buy the taps on ebay , you will find a wide variety in pricing so shop around.

Update: Tap came in yesterday. I made five 30-30 case gauges and a 30-06 gauge.
