I have been casting this bullet with plumbers lead and using TC bore butter. It shoots about 2 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards with 90grs. of 2f Goex out of my TC .54 Hawken. My question is, is there a lube that still works that is less messy? I'm imagining something that I can lube at home and carry pre lubed bullets in the field. Any thoughts on the matter? Thanks for all replies.

Check the stickies and you should find something. I use 50/50 beeswax and crisco then pan lube. Works for me.

I have read of people dipping their REAL bullets in Lee liquid alox, then letting them dry prior to use. I've not actually tried this yet, but I plan to give it shot as it would save time when at the range (range time is very valuable to me).

Think it was Larry Gibson I stole this lube recipe from

5:4

Beeswax:Olive Oil

That is a little soupy, I prefer 4.5ozs crisco to 5.5 ozs beeswax. I then mix in Olive oil, or vegetable oil to make it just soft enough.
I only add the Olive oil a little at a time, then let it all cool down to see how solid it is.
Does well for me.

I can't wait for my 32 maxi mold to get here so I can have all of these problems of figuring out what lube to use!!!!

Best wishes

Like Aspangler, I used 50-50Beeswax and Crisco, on REAL's/Mini's/and patches for a number of years. Might look up White Lable if you don't want to mess with making a batch.

5:4 Bees Wax to EVOO makes a great GG lube.

Good lube issues aside. Try it with and without a wool lubed wad under the boolit. Go with what works best.

A few years back I went to Xlox/2500 White label lubes with Pyrodex RS .prelube let set a few days not messy havent had any problems . would put in sealed container. I use scoal or shoe polish cans. if shooting alot I still brush the barrel after 10-15 shots. goex I still use bore butter. KyBill

Again, thanks for all the info! Any idea where I can buy Beeswax? Toilet rings are not made of it anymore it seems.

I tried dipping some .58 REAL bullets in Lee Alox the other day and was pleasantly surprised how well it worked. I just did one coat, then let them dry for 24 hours. I loaded them on top of 85gr Pyrodex RS into a Lyman plains rifle and fired off around 15 rounds. Accuracy was just as good as when I use a regular lube, such as Natural Lube 1000. The only difference I noticed was that the barrel was not quite as clean between shots, but other than than it worked fine. Considering ease of use, I might start doing it this way on a regular basis.

I don't know for sure but I thought Alox and BP was a no no. Of course my dad does it with 45-70, but I'm not about to tell him its a bad idea. ;)

Hornady308, Were you swabbing between shots? I don't mind swabbing at the range but try to travel light when I hunt. I like the Crisco beeswax idea, but I would like to be able to find supplies locally.

I ran one dry patch between shots, so not quite as easy as using a beeswax type lube.

IROCZ, you can swab between shots in the field with a spit patch. Just keep your jag and a patch or two in your bag with the powder and balls. I don't bother with a dry patch. Don't try to reuse the patch for the third shot, both sides taste nasty.

I use liquid alox and roll them in motor mica gives it a dry texture. No leading at all.

I use that lube on my Accurate Real's
I also coat them with a bit of wad slick Mica powder whilst they are drying and tacky
works for me
