One of my 7.62x54r's slugs out at .314, Shoots 8 inches at 100 yards, with some .310's I had. I purchased the Lyman mold 200 gm. .314 mold and cast some. Yep I got the gas checks and sized, lubed them. Only powder I had that was in my book"s" called for 12 gr. of green dot. At 30 yards it will put them in an inch. I need a hotter load though. Powder shortage makes it tough to purchase a lot of goodies. Currently have.; Greendot, blue dot, 4350 ,3031 and H380. Anyone have a book that shows a load for 200 cast using these powders.

You can try 27grs. - 31grs. IMR 3031 with that Lyman CB, which I surmise is #314299?

yes it is , and its a powder I have. I'm about 70 miles north of Portland on the north coast. Nobody seems to have any reloading supplys and empty shelves are normal. I will give it a try.

I suggest starting at 23 gr of the 3031 with a 1/2 - 3/4 gr dacron filler. Work up to 28 gr 3031 and the rifle will tell you the best accuracy load.

Good thought, Figured on starting with 3 shells of 25 and going up from there, but 23 sounds like a good place. Sighted in to hit with jacketed at 100 yards, My green dot drop was off the paper , simply "to lite" a load for the lead propelled. This rifle is a short carbine with sling. Can't say way but its easy to shoot, banging it is no worry and is a peach to carry. Heading to the garage to build them now.

I get pretty good groups with the lee 312 185 and the lee 312 160 wd straight ww with the check squeezed on with a .314 sizer over 29.8 of imr 3031. Any hotter and the groups opened up. AC and groups were a bit bigger and had a few lead smears in the bbl. Water dropping stopped any leading. Following Larry Gibsons advice I use a 5/8- 3/4 inch square of dacron. These loads shoot way better than the 148 milsurp stuff. Start dowm and work up, as always!
Good Luck!

The Lyman 314299 is the only boolit that has proven to be the most accurate (3/4" groups, 50 yds., ACC 5744, iron sights) in my M44 carbine. Tried the 155, 160, and 185 grain Lee boolits, but I never could pour anything near the bore diameter (.3135"). Also tried VV N133, and 2400 which produced 2" and 1 1/2" groups. I have some 3031, which I will try. Next step is to try these loads in a 91/30. The Lyman 314299 has really been the answer.

Tested them today. Started with 21 gr and moved one grain at a time to 31 gr. Did this at 50 yards , the 30 gr was my sweet spot , first two shots "dead center" , 3/4", yes it did. Had two more and shot them at 100 yards , First shot dead center, kid you not , remaining one 4 inches high but straight over center. With the 31 gr. none at 50 or 100 yards hit center. Gun cost 95 bucks and looks it, But loaded right I would feel comfortable to take it on a once in a life time hunt. Shes a keeper. the load for me was 30 gr. of 3130.

Didn't use filler but over 30 gr was to much . But 30 was the sweet spot. started low and worked it up. Will load next batch at your 29.8. I could have had a thousand dollar gun today and it would not have preformed any better that my $95.00 baby.

Might surprise you how much the dacron filler can improve things. You will use less powder for the "sweet spot" and it negates vertical dispersion at longer ranges because powder positioning is consistent.

Agree with Larry on fill. I use 20 gr. of 2400 with that boolit and dac fill, and get very respectable accuracy. Might want to start at 16 gr and work up half grain at a time until you are satisfied with accuracy. The slower powders work well, but it takes more of them and cost may be a consideration as well.

16g of 2400 (no filler) or 14g of TrailBoss. Both work for me in my Finn 39,28 as well as two 91-30's

I thank all of you for this thread–I just copied and pasted about 3 posts, since I've been on the hunt for good loads in my M/N and use the Lee 312-185.

5744 works very well with this powder. Remember it when you eventually find a place with powder. 4198 is a close second. I shoot about a grain off max for each of the loads listed above and they do well. Good luck.

Well still bragging about my 7.62x54R. When I had the bore slugged gunsmith laughed. Said at 314 bore she was a wall hanger. Well here's twelve shots I took at 100 yards. Look close , there all there. I'm a poor shot, poor eyes. 100 yards at open sights is a distance for me. Shows this, the right cast, behind the right powder. charged proper, gets it done. One more thing, The folks here told me what to do. I wish to thank you.. Look out deer.82612826158261982622

posted here then took it down, 'cuz I had work to do.

Success today with the Lee 185 grainer over 10 gr. Unique, as well as 20 grains of 2400.
I gave them 2 coats of 45-45-10 (over the pan lube), and loaded them long, with the top lube groove exposed.
my m38 seemed to like them. Had terrible leading before with stout charges and deeper seating.
