Hallo Okes

This is a post to thank you guys for the advice you gave me a couple of years ago in a thread : http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?106160-44-320gr-JDJ-mould

I had just good success with the WW 320grain LBT LFN so far in my Ruger Super Readhawk .44 Magnum. I shot numerous animals with it from springbuck to Kudu and now Giraffe. It went through everything I shot at, eaven at any angle exept on a Blesbuck Ram I took with a frontal shot at 164yards, in wich the boolit was found under the skin on the theigh after smashing the sholder on entry.

I took the bull giraffe at 77 yards with a quatering away shot. The boolit entered on the ribcage at the last rib on the leftside and exit on the right shoulder. The distance of the compleate boolit path was about 45". I was amazed with the exeptional penetration. The carkase of the bull (dressed), weight in at 1716 lb

Once again thank you all.

Lots of neck meat!! Joking aside, those LBT designs in "heavy for caliber" weights, are tops for large game, best of the best.

That is some impressive performance from a boolit, and some impressive shooting I might add.

Interesting. How many cubic feet of freezer do you need for that. I wonder what Lyman would of said about point blank range with a boiler room that size. I wish deer were that big while looking for them after the shot in brush.

Yep, you could feed a family for an entire year with that much meat

My, but I thought the title was a kidder when it said "Giraffe", that's outstanding!

In the olde thread it sounded as if it would be a major uphill climb to get permits to handgun hunt, could you give us a little more of what got you to this point, and any of the hunt(s) would be fantastic. So many of us dreamed as starry eyed kinder of traveling to your homeland to hunt as you have done. Thanks so much for posting!

I think we should get rid of the 120mm SABOT round for the M1 and go to the 44 lol. 45 inches is crazy!

I watch a special one time that showed giraffes fighting, it was impressive to say the least. I too would be curious as to what it taste like.
I don't have a problem, with it, but I just never had thought of hunting giraffe or zebra.

Giraffe have massive split hoves, I don't know the corect english word but, for a lack of better words they do "re-chew" I think. It is not a horse at all and the only thing they have in common with zebra is that they both occure in Africa. It's to me a very large bovine antilope with short horns and a long neck..... And according to Moses they may be munched ~!

The load I use behind the 320 LFN won't help you much as I don't believe you okes can get our propellants. The powder I use is Somchem S265 @ 23grain that launch the boolit @ 1400fps in the 9.5" barrel.

Here are some more pictures of a bull we took last year when we photographed the whole slaghtering/dressing process.

Fisher I'm glad you started this thread with a link to the other thread. I remember reading that thread in 2011 and have wondered what ever happened with that guy in S.A. that casts his own boolits for 44 and actually hunts plains animals with it. Now I know. Congrats on the giraffe! I enjoyed reading this thread as much as the last one.
This one has pictures!

People who have never seen a giraffe in the wild would be amazed at just how big they are. From the looks of the pic, that is a good bull. A lot of Americans who have never hunted Africa do not think of giraffe or zebra as game animals. That changes quickly after the first hunt. Could not afford to shoot a giraffe, and envy you in being able to take yours. Did however take a great mountain zebra, whose hide covers the couch behind me as I type this.

Could you tell me the length of that bullet and the COL of the cartridge? I want to try running in through Quick Load to get an approximate estimate of pressures.

I just looked at some Hodgdon data and we may be able to get close to your results. Hodgdon says a 325gr BTB LFN GC and 22.0gr H110 (our common MAGNUM handgun powder) should get 1368fps.....I'd be willing to try if someone provided the BTB bullets....LOL
Pretty interesting nonetheless....

Please forgive me for taking so long to answer you, but here's the info on the boolit:
Weight when lubed with gascheck = 326.5gr
Boolit Length with Check = 0.908"
COL=1.775"
Powder is Somchem S265 @ 23gr

I did the quik-load thing by changing the specs on the 310 LEE and pressure looked acceptble to me if you take the stronger frame of the SRH compared to others into account (44500psi CIP equals 40800 I think, but I would appretiate to know what you get.

According to my Somchem booklet S265 compares to IMR4227; H4227;Hercules 2400; W296 and AR2205.

I recon W296 @ 23gr might be be the closest one to my velocity and H110 should do roughly the same nominal velocity @ 23gr, both of them at lower pressure than my load with S265.

Some say W296 and H110 are the same. Personally I don't think they are but I have no evidence of this either other than others hear/say and a friends experience. But I'm not here to argue that crazy point.

I would NOT try and substitute 2400 for your powder, its a good bit hotter/faster burning according to what your S265 compares to. The IMR 4227 has been a good magnum powder for 44mag.
I use a lot of H110 and I have a 9 1/2" SRH also. While I don't have a heavy .44 mold YET, My pet load for my SRH is 260gr Keith style SWC (clone of H&G #503) over 23.5gr H110 and a mag primer. It quite accurate and its running 1450fps from my SRH.
I've always like seeing and hearing about game taken from anywhere in the world. BUT what makes it more interesting to me and for me is to hear the load details.
Thank you for sharing that info about your Giraffe.
