Had the buckets as full as I like in a hour . Then I took a break before I loaded them in the pickup . Bathroom scales say I have 1055 pounds of range lead to work again .Marvin

How loud can one say WOW
I have to 'settle' for pickings off the ground, no mining allowed

Regardless, congratulations
Take it while you can get it

That's pretty amazing for an hour's worth of work! What kind of a range did you get them from? Indoor, outdoor, pistol, rifle, private, public? How long has it been since they mined their berms otherwise?

What I wouldn't give for sand berms!

What I wouldn't give for sand berms!

So true. I miss the designated shooting areas in So. Cal. I was able to mine all the lead I wanted.

I was happy w/ 45#s that I just picked off the ground in about 20 minutes. I can't touch the berms so it's what I can see. But since I only put 1400 grains down range I came out ahead :)

It is a outdoor pistol club range open to the public as well . It is sand and I mined these 3 lanes about 3 months ago . Range has been there since the early 1800 hundreds . I barely pulled down the top layer of bullets . Marvin

Sounds like a business venture opportunity.

Dang. I just came from the range, where I spent about 20 minutes picking it up off the ground, and got about 20 pounds, and I thought that was pretty cool. 1055 pounds. Holy cow! Color me jealous!

1055 pounds.. Nice! Lets see.. let's say each boolit at 200 grains that's 35 boolits per pound (not figuring in the scrap and dirt). So, that's 36,925 boolits! HAPPY SHOOTING!!

The yield is 50-60 percent clean lead . But the jackets pay for the cost of molds and pots . Shoot AR only now so no powder, primers , or brass to buy . Might have to buy a new compressor some day . Time will tell . Marvin

I worked the same 3 lanes at the pistol range this morning . In 1 hour again I gained 1125 pounds according to the bathroom scales . I have those 3 lanes down to were the bullets are now packed into the sand and a lot more effort would be needed to remove the lead . Marvin

Now you know what you will be doing for the winter.

Good haul.

Yes I will be cleaning lead and casting bullets through out the winter for sure . Just adds to the enjoyment of the shooting hobby . Got this before the rainy season which made it easy pickens this year . Marvin

Whats your technique for picking them up and outa the berm?

melloairman
08-28-2013, 09:40 PM
It is a sand brim . I rake the lose bullets down . Shovel them into a sifter box . Shake and pour into the buckets . Under the first couple of inches of sand there is a packed layer of bullets that make the new arrivals work there way up the bank . Marvin
