Ok, I used the 45-70 1873 trapdoor loads in the 49th LYMAN for the 385 grain cast bullet . The starting load is 40.0 grains and the max load is 44.5 grains. I loading 40.5 grains and it sounded and kicked like a 300 win mag. I looked at the 47th and the loads are a lot lower. The starting load for the 45-70 1873 trapdoor, 385 grain cast bullet, is 30.0 and the max is 39.0. What's the deal with this ? Which is good to go ?

Probably both. I've had good luck with 35 grains and a 405 cast. Velocity in my 26" barrel was 1,225 and very consistant. With bullets as heavy as the 400gr range it doesn't take much increase in velocity to increase recoil considerably.
Good Luck,
Rick
