I was reading the 30/30 is a poor mans 357 lever rifle post as I am having the same issue with my light cast plinking loads the OP is having. My 175 grain cast Lee C309-170F shoot quite a bit lower then my jacketed load. I have loaded up some cast to match the jacketed rounds which are fun to shoot but I would like to save a few bucks and load some with Unique for a fraction of the cost of shooting faster loads with W748 powder. I have been looking at the different molds I could purchase but I am not sure if say a 115 grain would get the POI close or do I need to go lighter. I do have a set of Fire sights on the rifle but there not all that conducive to changing them around all the time.

So I was wondering if anyone would be willing to sell me a few light bullets for my 30/30 so I could try them out and figure out what weight would give me a close POI with my 170 grain jacketed load? I would be interested in trying both the 30/30 bullets and the 32-20 bullets. My rifle shoots .310 cast bullets.

Muddy,

I use a Lyman 3118 (311008) over five grains of Red Dot. I haven't chronoed it yet, but it's very soft and very accurate. I even used two rounds to knock over two steel pigs at 100 yards. I aimed a foot over their backs and down they went. Slowly, but they went down. :)

I'm using the 311008 over 6.7grains of Greendot. It's a light almost no recoil load, and sighted in at 50 yds it only drops about 3 inches at 100 yds in my Marlin 336 20".

311008 here also - over 8 grains Unique for silhouette chicken loads, 10 grains Unique for silhouette pig loads. Like shooting a .22!

I like the Lee 311-93-1R with about 7 grains of Trailboss for your purposes.

Would a lighter bullet have to be pushed faster than a heavier bullet in order to raise where the impact will be? If so, gas checks will almost certainly be necessary to get close to hunting loads. Or am I thinking about this wrong?

Well since I just went ahead and ordered a 93 grain mold I hope you are thinking about it wrong? I would think a lighter bullet should print higher then a heaver one due to less drop as it travels to target. Now in 50 yards I am not sure how much higher but with the lighter bullet I should be able to get the velocity up before I need a gas check. The next couple weeks will tell the tale as I work up a load and see whats what.
