Loaded a box of 405 boolits in front of 10 gr Unique just to do some plinking. Found out: my eyes are about done, trouble seeing the front sight real clear, although the 50 yd target was OK. 10 gr Unique is fun to shoot out of my 1886 Win. Accuracy was about what my eyes would allow. Good load, great gun, bad eyes.....:-(
My 1902 1886 is 38 years older than me and in better shape !

A friend introduced me to 10gr. of unique in the 45-70 with cast back in the '90s and it's been a good fun plinker load with every gun I've shot it in.

Get a Lyman Hawkeye, basically a .040 diam hole in a plastic disk with a suction cup to attach to your glasses.

Looking through a "pinhole" works like a magical lense, EVERYTHING is in better focus, rear sight, front sight AND target.

Make up a test unit from a piece of tinfoil with a small pencil punched hole in it and look thru it. If you have never
done this, you will be surprised how much it can help - especially on a sunny day, not as good on cloudy days.

10.5 grains of a Milsurp (Unique acting powder) and a Ranch Dog 350 (378 grains in my alloy) gives me 1105 fps and one hole group off shooting sticks at 50 yds.

Dang! I forgot all about that aperture eye cup. I used that device years ago when pistol shooting. Thanks for the reminder!!

The Hawkeye is about $20 most anywhere...Found an adjustable iris by Gehmann, but it's $65 at Champions Choice.

I've been running 12 gr. unique under 350 gr. lead with great success.

We've been running 13 grains (GMDR.com data) under a 405 gr bullet. Gets about 1100 fps or a little more in most of our rifles. Inexpensive and impressive.

Whenever anyone asks me where to start with a .45-70 for a fun load, I say start at
10gr Unique and creep upwards to get what you want with a max around 15 gr or so,
depending on the gun and the boolit. Most settle in around 12 gr and are pleased.

Been pushing 405gr pills with 14gr of Unique out of a H&R Buffalo Classic. To quote a fellow shooter, "I like dat, me."
