It's basically a shotgun powder that works well in smaller cartridges too, like 32 acp, 380, 9mm.

700X is a versatile powder originally intended for shotgun use, but is used successfully in a number of pistol cartridges. It has yellow flakes scattered in it for ID purposes. I have used it in 45ACP, 9MM, 38 special with good results. It works in other small calibers as well and is economical to use. LLS

I have a friend that only uses 2 powders to load 30 different pistol and rifle cases. 700x and wc867

I used to shoot trap and skeet with 12`s and a 20 gauge. I used 700x in handgun loadings also. The bad thing about the powder is that it is kinda dirty. Every time I came home from firing 100 to 200 shotshells I`d have a gray gunbarrel to about a foot back from the muzzle.Robert

I used up a can of 700X behind my lightweight 165 gr. .44 boolit in my Marlin. 10 grs. of 700X behind that light little boolit made it pretty zippy and quite accurate.

It is pretty fast powder so start light.

The Lyman Cast Bullet handbook makes reference to 700X in several calibers. If you don't have the manual, let me know what cartridges you want to load for and I can look them up to see if it is useful to you.

I've been using it to preserve my supply of Titegroup and Bullseye. It works good but not great in most pistol calibers. My RCBS Uniflow meters it pretty well, Lee Pro Auto Disk won't meter it below 3.4 grains.

I use it in several handguns plus several rifles. One is a Krag and it works great in it, also in the 223 Rem.

I assume the 223 was a bolt gun?

I have used/use it in 380, 9mm, 45AP, 44mag.
What cartridges do you load?

3.0-3.4g 700X, 158SWC in 38sp
.
4.5g 700X over any 230g boolit or j-word is my never fail 45ACP loading.
.
5.4g 700X of 200g SWC in 45ACP-approach this load with caution, it has never given me problems but it is a max load.
.
8.1-8.4g 700X over a 240g SWC in 44mag is a nice warm plinking load. You can start about 7.5g and still have good accuracy but a bit milder.

375, any idea about the velocity on that .38 Special load? I recently tried 3.0 grains under a 90 grain SWC in a snub nose .32 H&R Magnum and was not impressed, less than 800 fps.

No, never clocked it. It's supposed to be around 800 fps from a normal barrel and felt like a normal load from a 2" barrel. It's just something I worked up sometime, and if it wasn't accurate I wouldn't mention it.
32H&R published data was probably shot in a 5 or 6" barrel.

700x works well with cast lead PB in the 45-70. The "GMDR" site has a good load database for CF rifles with cast boolits and faster pistol powders. These are reduced velocity loads.

This is the only powder I use for handgun except for my 44 Magnum. That includes 32 S&W WC, 9mm, 38 Spec., 38-40, 40 S&W, and 45 ACP. All cast bullet loads.

I find the comment about the powder being dirty, rather interesting in that compared to Bullseye, at least in my loads and guns it is WAY cleaner. Many years ago I ran a test in an S&W 4506 to see how long I could shoot without cleaning. With the 700X I stopped at 1000 rounds (and the gun was still running fine) but never made it past 600 with Red DOT, Bullseye or Unique. Perhaps the new 700X is different from what I had then but my current lot is only 3 years old and I find it to be as clean as ever.

Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook 3rd Edition lists almost every caliber and load for 700X. It's the older version.

Maybe it just varies by gun and caliber. I find Bullseye is very clean in the .32 auto and revolver while 700X is quite dirty in those two.

it's my fav powder for 148-ish wadcutters in the 38 special , yet at around 3 grains per shot 12 #'s would last a heap of a long time .....

I use 700X for almost all my light to mid range loads in 44 Special, 44 Mag, 45acp, 45 Colt, and most recently 38 Special. I have found 700X to be extremely clean burning and very accurate.

The only problem I ever had with it was trying to get it to meter in 3g charges or less for 38 wadcutter loads in my Lee Autodisk. Ended up weighing all the charges just to be sure. The flakes were just a bit to big to work well with that powder measure in that small a charge.

My cowboy and light range load in 45 Colt is 4.5g 700X under the Lee 200gr RNFP. Same 4.5gr of 700X for 44 Special, and 45acp with 200gr Lee flat points.

If I want some more thump and don't feel like wasting my more expensive slower powders, I put 6gr of 700 under a 250gr FP in the 45 Colt. Or just under 5gr for the 44 special, but I stick with the 200gr slug in the little 44.

Since 700 was difficult in 38 special, I was thinking of trying Titegroup but haven't yet. Maybe it will meter better for me in those very small charges.

Any idea on velocity of this load? Looks like a nice cheap load, and 700X is readily available to me, on top of the 4lb jug I already have. Thanks.

Well I don't have a chrono or a load book here at work but I think the load is around 850 to 880 fps or so depending on your barrel length. Its accurate, very clean, cheap to shoot and still has plenty of power for a low pressure big bore.

For my target loads in 45 Colt I am finding 5gr of 700X under the 200gr RNFP works a bit better for me than the 4.5gr cowboy load I was using.

For 44 Special I still have it at 4.5gr. I may tweak that load later on, (heard 4.2gr works really nice for minimal recoil) but for now the majority of my shooting is with the 45 so that one gets all the fine tuning.
