View Full Version : 30 30 Trapper
Hello All. This my first post here. I've got a Win 30 30 Trapper, had it for years. Been playing around with the Lee 309 170 fn bullet in it for a couple of years or so. Pretty accurate with 18 grains of 2400. I'm casting it 1 1/2 to 1 lead/lino. with Hornady gas checks sized .309. My F1 chrony says around1750. That's probablly about as hot as I'd like to push 2400 in a 30 30. Any way, I'd like to up that velocity to around 1900 with H335, maybe 29 grains or so? Has anybody done this? Been doing searchs on all the cast bullet forums that I know of and haven't found this combination. I'd like to stay with H335 as I have other guns that like it. Trying to keep the powder types to as few as I can, and besides H335 meters so well. Am I asking too much out of a 16" tube? I've chronographed factory Federal 170s out of my trapper and they run right at 2000fps. I pulled one apart and it looked like 748 for what that's worth, but then that's factory ammo and they have access to pressure testing equipment. Any input welcome. Zack.

29 grains would be fine, but start at 27 for you to become comfortable to go higher. 170-180 grainer boolits. If that lookalike powder comes to 34-36 grains, then it prolly is a 748 commercial lot. ... felix

Using surplus CMR100 powder
"I got some of this a few years back and have tried to get loads for the 308 going with it, but results haven't been too promising.
But I did try it in a reduced 30-30 load with a Lyman 311291 sized 309 WOW !!!
"In 2 rifles ( 340 Savage and a trapper 16" barrel Winnie)Both shoot it great.
Load 18 gr of CMR100 with a tuft of dacron under the gascheck.
CMR 100 was said to be the same as 4895 but reduce loads 15%. This load came from an OLD Lyman reloading manual of 21 gr of 4895 then the 15% reduction.
As soon as I get off my duff and order the RCBS or Lyman .358 200 gr bollit mold, I'm going to try it in my wifes 35 rem.
I don't know the powder # your asking about, but check and see if it's the same as CMR100. Jeff Bartlet is where I got mine."
THat said 21 gr of 4894 to 25 gr of the same is where I got the starting loads.
I have not run on the Chrony yet as I was looking for a soft shooting load for a 12 year old shooter. His gun is a 340 Savage and the one I tried was a 82 Trapper. The accuracy is so good I can't see going up in Vel but you might want too. Lots of loads for 30-30 and 4895.
The load I used for my son when he shot this gun was Lyman 311291 GC over 30 gr 0f IMR 3031. shot good and why mw=ess with sucess?
Good Shooting,
