I know some use small rifle primers in some pistol cases - and I'll know how this works soon enough ! But... any y'all used the small pistol magnum primers in rifles, say especially .222 and .223 with success ? I got a bunch(5000) of 'em CHEAP and even though I have plenty of SR primers, I have no other use for these, soooo....

No, the primer cup is much thinner and you'll end up with primer blow outs. It's not safe.

In regards to small primers. Rifle in pistol OK. Pistol in rifle No!

Large primers are completely different.

It has been reported by many who apparently have spoken with CCI about this. I have even seen the email posted in the past. Reports are CCI has no difference between SR and SPM primers other than packaging. The posted email I read some time ago went on to say most employees of CCI only purchase one or the other for use in both. I have no first hand knowledge though. And I have only seen info of this applying to CCI. It has lead me to consider purchasing just CCI small rifle primers in the future and using them or pistol and rifle.

I use the SPM primer in 223 with LIGHT cast loads, less than 35,000 psi. My small game load is 5.5 gr.Acc 9 under a 58 gr. cast for 50/50 ww/pure and air cooled. 1/2 - 3/4 inch groups at 50 yds and vel in the 1300-1400 fps range. No signs of pressure with these but I would work up real slow if using them for anywhere near full power.

I use Small Pistol Primers in my .22 Hornet loads, but not Mag primers.

this is similar to my M/O.
I use 40-k as a cut off from pistol to rifle primers quite often I need to bump the powder charge with the pistol primer to match the rifle primer in velocity/accuracy.
the pistol magnum primers may not need the bump.

Went to Accurate Powders load data website and they list a 5.7x 28mm FN round at 48,200 PSI using a Winchester WSP primer. Yikes, that's a lot.

A forum member here has an email from CCI confirming that their #550 primer is the exact same as their #400 primer, with different labeling, but is the exact same product in every other aspect. He can chime in if he wants. I won't call him out by name.

I also use standard SP in Hornet, not SPM's however.
