Picked one up today been watching them for a couple months. It's a TULA 1944 the stock shows repair where the side mount for the scope had been. And the receiver has been repaired where it was drilled and taped for the scope mount. I'll post pictures after I get it cleaned up. Anybody have inbut on these rifles?

Fun guns, well worth the price. There is a cottage industry that has sprung up retro-fitting the sniper versions back to their original configuration. Lots and lots of info available online.

Plan to spend a LONG time cleaning the cosmoline (sp?) out of the barrel. If you fire it before cleaning, it'll make getting the junk out of the barrel nearly impossible. When I was in the army, (a LONG time ago) we used kerosene.

Steam works good too.

Going to give this a try except for the red dot. I had to drill the pins out had a heck of a time with them. They were soldered also. I ordered a NC Star 2.5 power and a couple different mounts. Cleaned the grease off at the car wash and dried everything completely and oiled. Scrubbed the barrel clean and hit the finish on the stock with oven cleaner. Anybody ever bed one of these stocks?? Would it do any good? Thinking about cutting the barrel at 18 inches. The Ruger scout is 16. What do ya think? I'm going to shoot it before I do any cutting.

I have worked on the bedding of a several 91/30's. They are adjusted with shims as you probably already know. My rifle had the action pulled down at the back making the barrel raise out of the stock at the front. When hand guard was installed the barrel was forced back down. The groups walked when the barrel got hot. I worked with shims and a scraper to relieve any binding, it shot much better. I would take a look at the bedding, it might be worth the effort.

I love my 91/30. For the price of ammo, I think everyone should have one. I love the history behind these guns, and, let's face it: If you've got one that was made during war-time, chances are high that it saw action in some way or another...

Now this Guy has his poop in a group. Bet some of you "part time" gunsmiths are learning from him.

Perfect!!

Wonder what the welding job did to the case hardening? Or are Mosin Bolts case hardened? I know they have a separate "bolt head" and maybe the bolt body is not hardened...but I'd sure want to know before I took a welder to it.

Great great rifles at good prices and can be made into real shooters. They work and don't break and you won't cry if it gets scratch or ding. Bedding as stated above can be a real help. Also carb and choke cleaner is good for cleaning the concrete like hard slime that is old cosmoline.
