I love my Mosin 91/30. With the price of ammo for it, definitely worthwhile!

Got mine for plunking, cheap ammo an all. No its become my go to caliber. All the power you could need, not to picky about being down loaded, plenty accurate lots of history what's not to like?

Agree, great hunting caliber, great with cast.

Starting level. 30-'06 loads work fine with most powders with jacketed bullets.

Both of mine like #314299 cast from wheelweights, unsized, no GC, tumbled in Lee Liquid Alox, with 7 grs. of Bullseye, or sized .313 with gascheck and 16 grs. of #2400.

Looks like they have about doubled in price. Cabellas is asking about $200.00 for Ml-91's now. A couple of months ago they were selling them for under a hundred.
Supply and demand I guess.

I like mine, just brass is a bit hard to get cheap.

They aren't getting any cheaper. Might as well get two. I prefer the carbines. Love my m-44.
If you don't have a C&R you might want to get them. You can still pick up the carbines for $250 and the 91/30s a bit cheaper than 200.

I have a pre-war Sako 28/30 in match condition with a true .308 barrel. The thing is an absolute tack driver, and is my favorite rifle to shoot. It cost 3 times the cabelas price, but winning military bolt silhouette matches with it makes it worth the cost in my mind. Mine shoots the 311299 and 311365 boolits lights-out.

Finding good brass can be hit and miss in the current situation though...

The carbines will beat you up a bit. Accuracy is somewhat variable with many of the makers, except for the Finns. The Finns also have the best sights.

I killed my first deer decades ago with a Finnish Mosin Nagant M91. I had bought some Yugoslav FMJ ammo, not surplus and boxer primed and shot it up, got myself a die set and loaded some .308 jacketed soft points from Hornady. It could shoot about a 3 or 4 inch group at 100 yards with iron sights and my poor vision, and I killed several deer with it. I still have that rifle but hunt with others now, and I have a couple or 3 other MN's in the safe. Not as good a rifle as a Mauser, the safety takes some practice but it gets the job done.

Just got one from Widener's a week ago. Listed for $129 with accessories (you NEED that bayonet!) and with shipping, it was $150 to my front door on my C&R FFL. It'll be the last, if I have any self-restraint left. I have two 91/30's, an M-44 and a Finn M-39 in that caliber.

To quote that funny on Mosin-Nagants somewhere on the internet: You can imagine an Russian officer teaching the class. "Is GUN! Is NOT safe!"

I have two nice 91/30's left at 130 each here in the shop the last of a batch I got 6 months ago. I am still working on a sliding safety for the trigger guard and have the jigs to adapt the Weaver #1 side mount for the Mosin's for a real low mount scope setup.

I have one and love it. I just wish I had bought a case of ammo when I got it. Another thing, it is zeroed in at 300 yards which gives me a problem when shooting at 100 yards. Even at 200 yards it is about 12 inches high.

It is a hard thing to explain how an inexpensive rifle such as the Mosin can be so much fun to shoot and reload for. Especially when a person has a few more rifles that cost quite a bit more, are more accurate, are nicer looking. But the darn things are well made and actually do shoot pretty good if you match the boolit diameter to your bore. I find plinking type loads using 2400, red dot, unique types of powder are what I like to shoot. Mine shoots a 314299 sized to .313 real good. You will have a lot of fun with it and isn't that what this is all about?

Have a 99 and 38 that KCSO did bolt handle jobs on. (He does nice work folks and is reasonable). The 38 is a great little carbine, and looks a whole lot better than the 44 w/bayonet (IMO), and is fun to shoot. Might even hunt it one of these days. The 91 is scoped and is fun to shoot at the range but would hate to carry that long bbl in the field. Wish brass was more pleantiful. Both of mine like/need .315.

I bought one from Big 5 about 3 years ago. It has the hex receiver and was rearsenaled after the war with a laminated stock. It is a great shooter and very tolerant of reloads. I shoot it in a 100 yd military bench rest match at my club and the point of impact wanders around depending on how hot it gets. When it's on, it will shoot 1 moa. Normally about 2-3 moa. You can fix the sight very easily by stripping the insulation off a piece of black 12ga house wire and sliding it over the front sight pin. Fits nicely. Then trim it and slide it up and down until it shoots where you want it.

If you can find a post war M44 most are in like new condition. I have a 1948 M44 that is a good shooter it even likes .308 Dia. jacketed bullets.

Just noticed that Dunham`s sporting goods stores are carrying MN 91/30`s again. They stopped selling them after the school shooting episode. The new price isn`t the $88 it was, now they are $145 on sale from $299!Robert

If you have a C&R, Widener's has the 91/30 for $129 plus shipping, which is going to be in that same ballpark.

That's the last gun I bought and to be honest, it looks brand new!

I'm waiting for the weather to cool a bit so I can take it to the range.

Buy one now! Heck - buy two...

Soon they will be unavailable and what you have will quadruple in value.

I have a single cavity lyman 311413 hollow point mold that drops slightly out of round .3145-.3155. I size them to .314 with a homemade gas check and Bens Red lube and stuff them over 10.0g of Unique. Recoil is laughable. Accuracy is SERIOUS.
It's really funny to shoot a rifle as long as a 91/30 and recoil be less than my 223 bolt action.
I was shooting clay targets set on the berm at 25 and 50 yards. Point of aim was dead on at 25 and a tight 6'oclock hold at 50. I couldn't miss! That hollow point cast from air coole wheel weights; Looked like an ashcan went off! Clay went EVERYWHERE.

I've been toying with the notion of paper patching this rifle but this load is so nice, easy and CHEAP, I'll probably just keep with it.

I was lucky enough to stumble upon a couple hundred pcs of Win brass....I wish I could get a collet neck size die. Why, ohh why don't Lee make one?

I just came home from the Concord, NH Gun Show with a 1940 Tikka M-91 (one piece stock, uncommon) in very fine shape. Stock is nicely striped, bore is shiney, no pits and very nicely blued, light pitting but very good bluing on the receiver - there is no date stamped on the tang. Just a 3 (inspectors mark?) and an R in a circle.
Could very well be a Remington WWI contract gun, no date) but I didn't know they marked the receivers with the Imperial Eagle usually that is placed on the barrel above the Date and serial number. Stock does have a couple of dings and a hairline repaired split on the upper but otherwise, in very sound shape with a nice, smooth finish.

I paid a bit of a premium($325.00), but I am very happy with it.

1925 Tula ex-Dragoon 91/30
1939 Ishevsk low-wall 91/30 (something of a symmetrical mark (pine cone?) and a 10 precedes the original serial # (I'm thinking Bulgarian refurb). (no pine cone on the stock)
1944 Ishevsk 91/30 Pu sniper
1944 M-44
1940 Finn Tikka M-91 #14xxx
1941 Finn Sako M-39 w/ antique 1894 Chatellerault (sp?) receiver #212xxx
