i tested a homebrew Tri-Ball load, follwoing the recipe Mr. Gates provided exactly and carefully, but reduced the powder charge of blue Dot to 27gr. i got extractor marks, pretty good ones on all hulls. No extraction/ejection difficulties. No flat primers, etc.

how serious a pressure sign are they?

Here they are.

They are problem for that soft case as they look like they
are bulging on the back of the rim due to pressure.. I never had any
bulge there but bulged ahead of rim, to match extractor size.
I used all tougher cases for hairy loads.
If what I see in picture are bulges on the back from pressure ,
case is real soft. ..Ed

cpleri, I'm using Cheddite cases with 28 grains of blue dot, and there's not a mark on the base/rim when the empties come out of the 870. What gun are you getting these extractor cut marks with? Are some boltfaces more susceptible than others to showing marks on the shell base?

Are the Fiocchi cases brass plated steel like the cheddites, or are the bases real brass?

Its an 870 and the Fiocchi are known for being soft. I will try federal cases and see. I bet its becasue the cases are so soft since I fired a 2.25oz load from Nitro Ammunition which used the Starline/Cheddite hulls, with no marks at all in the same gun.

I have been working on heavy slug loads in my 870. I am shooting a .69 caliber musket conical, sized to .877 in a wad.
Respective weight, 740 grains.
I'm using the 3" Nitro hull with a powder charge was 35 grains of Blue Dot for the first loads. I then raised the powder charge to 38 grains (Blue Dot). There were NO ejector marks on either load. According to the Lyman book, I can still run up to 40 grains of BD. I think the 38 grain load is a good place for me to stop though.

Where in Texas?
I am in Amarillo, if you come through the area I can provide you with some good compression formed hulls for testing.

Thanks, ALL!
I am near Fort Hood. Not all that close to Amarillo: Texas is BIG!
I have a fair selection of hulls, Federal, Remington, Rio and Cheddite; enough too test loads anyway. Do you recommend any other?

Hello Musketeer Brother Cpileri, while testing any load start with Fiocchi hull and when you start seeing extractor and pressure marks its a sign you have reached a safe limit on those hulls and if you want to stick with that perticular load for hunting, then its time to switch over to Federal hulls, this way you do not have any extraction issues while taking a pot shot at the most beautiful deer or a bear and your Nitro Express refuse to reload, due to a hull being stuck and having the need to use a wooden dowel to tap it out ! !

at this point I had to use a wooden dowel to help push the hulls out of the gun before I could re-load, the extractor being very thin on Savage did not help the situation either:

Very dangerous situation, you are very talented Musketeer and want to see you succeed.

Use the BEST for these social loads.
Remington Premier or Win AA or Federal Champion,
I would use the Premier

Mike, the tri-ball won't work in any of those hulls. It needs a 3" straight wall hull. See this thread:

The original recipe lists Federal Gold Medal hulls along with the Fiocchi and Cheddite. I wasn't aware the Champions were 3" hulls. Thought they were a target load, but I'm often wrong.
